Timing Belt or Chain?

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 4, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Toyota Hilux Mk8 (AN120/AN130) 2016-2024.

Good news for owners of the 2016–2024 Hilux: both diesel engines use a timing chain, not a belt. The 2.4 D-4D (2GD-FTV) and 2.8 D-4D (1GD-FTV) are chain-driven, so there is no scheduled cam-belt replacement to budget for.

A timing chain is designed to last the life of the engine under normal servicing. Keep to the oil-change schedule with the correct low-SAPS oil — clean oil is what keeps the chain and its tensioner healthy.

So what is the “T BELT” light?

Some older Hilux (the previous KUN-series with the 1KD/2KD or 5L-E engines) had a timing belt and a “T BELT” reminder light that came on around 150,000 km to prompt a belt change. The 2016-on chain engines do not have this reminder. If you are searching for how to reset a T-BELT light, you almost certainly have an older belt-driven Hilux — and on those the light is a genuine prompt to replace the belt, not just to reset.

FAQ

Does the 2.4 or 2.8 Hilux have a cam belt? No — both are timing-chain engines.

When should the chain be replaced? There is no fixed interval; a chain is only replaced if it stretches or rattles (usually a sign of neglected oil changes). A light rattle on cold start-up is worth investigating.

What about the auxiliary (drive) belt? The accessory belt that drives the alternator and A/C is a normal wear item — inspect it at services and replace if cracked or glazed.

If a cam/crank timing or VVT fault code appears, decode it on autodtcs.com.
