A blown headlight bulb is an MOT failure and a safety risk, but on the Mazda 3 (BM/BN) with halogen headlights it is a job most owners can do. Cars fitted with xenon (HID) or LED headlights are a different story — those units are best left to a workshop. Check which type you have before buying a bulb.
Which Bulb Does the Mazda 3 Use?
| Function | Halogen bulb |
|---|---|
| Low beam (dipped) | H11 (55 W) |
| High beam (main) | HB3 / 9005 (60 W), or H15 (55 W) where the high beam doubles as the daytime running light |
| Front indicator | WY21W (amber) — LED on some trims |
| Front position / DRL | W5W or LED, depending on trim |
Xenon cars use a sealed D4S projector (high voltage — dealer job), and LED headlights have no replaceable bulb. If in doubt, look at the bulb you remove or check your handbook.
How to Replace a Halogen Headlight Bulb
- Switch everything off and open the bonnet. Work on a cool headlight.
- Reach the back of the headlight from the engine bay. On some sides you may need to move the air intake or washer-bottle neck for clearance.
- Remove the round rubber or plastic dust cover from the back of the headlight.
- Unclip the wiring connector, then release the metal spring clip (or twist the bulb holder) and withdraw the old bulb.
- Fit the new bulb without touching the glass — skin oil creates a hot spot that shortens its life. Hold it by the metal base, or wipe it with alcohol if you touch it.
- Refit the clip or holder, reconnect the plug, and refit the dust cover squarely so it seals.
- Test both beams. Replacing bulbs in pairs keeps the light output even.
Frequently Asked Questions
What low-beam bulb does a Mazda 3 BM take?
Halogen cars use an H11 (55 W) dipped-beam bulb. High beam is HB3/9005, or H15 where the main beam also serves as the daytime running light.
Can I replace a xenon or LED headlight bulb myself?
Xenon (D4S) involves high voltage and LED headlights have no serviceable bulb, so both are workshop jobs. Only the halogen bulbs are a straightforward DIY change.
Do I need to aim the headlight after changing a bulb?
Changing a like-for-like bulb doesn’t alter aim. If you disturbed the headlight unit or the self-levelling system, have the aim checked.
If a headlight warning or bulb-out message stays on after the swap, decode it on autodtcs.com.
