Smearing, streaking or juddering wipers on your Mazda 3 (BM/BN) usually just mean the blades are worn. New front blades take a few minutes to fit, and the trick is lifting the arms off the glass without letting them snap back and crack the windscreen.
Lifting the Wiper Arms (Service Position)
The Mazda 3 has no special button combination for a wiper service position — you simply lift the arms by hand. Switch the ignition off first so the wipers can’t move while you work, then lift the arms away from the glass. Lift the driver’s-side arm first; when lowering them afterwards, lower the passenger side first and support each arm by hand so it doesn’t fall against the windscreen.
How to Replace the Front Wiper Blades
- With the ignition off, lift the wiper arm until it locks upright, away from the glass.
- Open the clip at the centre of the blade where it meets the arm.
- Turn the blade across the arm and slide it off the hook.
- Fit the new blade onto the hook until the clip clicks home, and check it is locked on.
- Gently lower the arm back onto the glass, supporting it so it doesn’t snap down.
- Switch on and test — the blades should sweep cleanly with no streaks or chatter.
Rear Wiper Blade
On the hatchback, lift the rear arm, rotate the blade until it unlocks, and pull it off; fit the new one until it clicks. If you’re only replacing the rubber refill, pull the old rubber out of the holder and slide the new strip in, keeping the metal tensioning strips.
What Size Wiper Blades Does the Mazda 3 Take?
The BM/BN hatchback uses three different lengths:
- Driver’s side (front): 600 mm (24″)
- Passenger side (front): 450 mm (18″)
- Rear: 300 mm (12″)
The front blades use Mazda’s hook/push-button fitting. Always match the length already on the car; the saloon’s rear wiper differs from the hatchback’s.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I put Mazda 3 wipers in service position?
There’s no electronic service position on this generation. Turn the ignition off so the wipers stay put, then lift the arms off the glass by hand — driver’s side up first, passenger side down first.
What size wiper blades does a Mazda 3 BM take?
The BM/BN hatchback uses a 600 mm (24″) driver’s blade, a 450 mm (18″) passenger blade and a 300 mm (12″) rear blade. Match the fitting already on the car; the saloon’s rear differs.
Why do my new wipers still smear?
Clean the glass thoroughly (traffic film and wax cause streaking), make sure the blade clicked fully onto the arm, and check the rubber isn’t twisted. A worn arm spring can also lift the blade off the glass.
While you’re topping up the washer fluid and checking wipers, it’s a good time to reset the service reminder — see our Mazda 3 service light reset guide.
