Before electrical work on a 2004–2008 Ford F-150 you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative first. This generation relearns its idle and shift strategy afterward, so expect a short settling-in drive. This is the US-market procedure.
- Ignition off, key out, eye protection on.
- Open the hood; the 12 V battery is in the engine compartment (Motorcraft maintenance-free, group 59 or heavy-duty group 65).
- Remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red).
- Reconnect positive first, negative last; refit any battery shield.
- Reset the clock and radio, then let the engine idle to temperature and drive at least 10 miles so the idle and transmission strategies relearn.
FAQ
Why does it idle or shift oddly afterward?
The engine and transmission relearn their adaptive strategies after a disconnect — firm or soft shifts and a slightly rough idle are normal until a 10-mile drive completes the relearn.
Which cable first?
Negative off first, negative on last.
What battery does it take?
Group 59 (standard) or the heavy-duty group 65; the CCA isn’t printed in the manual — match the number on the old battery.
If your F-150 stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
