Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 14, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Ford Mustang Mk6 (S550) 2015-2023.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Before electrical work on a 2015–2023 Ford Mustang you disconnect the 12 V battery, negative first. On the S550 the battery sits under a shield you remove first. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Ignition off, key out, eye protection on.
  2. Open the hood and remove the battery shield (three fasteners) with a screwdriver.
  3. Remove the negative (−, black) cable first, then the positive (+, red) (group 96R, ~590 CCA).
  4. Reconnect positive first, negative last, then refit the shield.
  5. Reset the clock and radio, then idle to temperature and drive about 10 miles so the idle and transmission relearn.

If your Mustang stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
