Reset the Service Indicator

These instructions apply to the Toyota Auris Mk1 (E15) 2006-2014. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: May 18, 2026

The service indicator on the Toyota Auris E15 (2006–2014) is a reminder for scheduled maintenance — specifically the oil change interval on this generation. The light isn’t a fault: it’s a counter that fires every 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first. After completing the oil and filter change, reset the counter using the ODO/TRIP button on the instrument cluster — no scan tool required, but the procedure is timing-sensitive.

The ODO/TRIP button on the Auris E15 cluster handles the service-indicator reset.

When to Reset the Service Indicator

  • After completing an oil and filter change.
  • After any maintenance work where the previous service-indicator reset was missed.
  • If the reminder appears on a freshly-purchased Auris and you’ve confirmed (or just done) the oil change.

⚠️ This reset is for the oil change reminder only. It does not clear engine-management fault codes, ABS warnings, airbag lights, or any other indicators. For DTC codes, see autodtcs.com.

Before You Start

  • Park on a level surface; switch off all electrical consumers.
  • Identify the ODO/TRIP button on your specific cluster — it’s typically on the lower-left of the speedometer face, near the fuel-gauge side. On hybrid (HSD) trims the button position is identical.
  • Read through the procedure once before starting. The timing is precise: you need to hold the button while turning the key from OFF to ON, and keep holding for several seconds.

Tools and Supplies

None for the reset. The procedure is entirely cluster-button based.

Service Indicator Reset — Step-by-Step

  1. Start the engine normally and let the cluster fully wake up.
  2. Press the ODO/TRIP button repeatedly until the trip information appears on the odometer display (cycling between ODO / Trip A / Trip B).
  3. Stop on TRIP A. This is the specific display state that lets the reset enter.
  4. Switch the engine OFF. The cluster goes dark.
  5. Press and hold the ODO/TRIP button.
  6. While still holding the button, turn the ignition key to position ON (the position before START — engine doesn’t crank, cluster lights up).
  7. Keep holding the button. After 3–5 seconds the trip-A reading will start counting backward toward zero.
  8. Continue holding until the display shows 000000. The service indicator on the cluster will turn off at this moment.
  9. Release the button.

Verify the Reset Worked

Switch the ignition off, wait 5 seconds, then turn it back to ON. The wrench/spanner indicator should no longer appear. On the Auris hybrid trim, the multi-info display under the speedometer also tracks “miles to next service” — that figure should now show the full new interval (typically 10,000 miles / 16,000 km).

Troubleshooting

  • Reset doesn’t work the first try. The most common cause is selecting the wrong display before switching the engine off. You must be on TRIP A (not ODO, not Trip B) before step 4. Restart from step 1.
  • Display doesn’t reach 000000. You released the button too early. The hold needs to continue past 5 seconds — keep going until the indicator actually clears. If at 10 seconds nothing has happened, restart from step 1.
  • Reset worked but reminder returns after a few drives. The Auris ECU’s counter is stored in EEPROM, which can fail to commit if the battery is weak during the reset. Have the battery load-tested; if marginal, replace before redoing the reset.
  • ODO/TRIP button cycles trip displays but doesn’t enter reset. Make sure the engine is OFF before the button is held — the reset path only opens during the brief power-up sequence at ignition ON.
  • Procedure differs on your specific Auris. The Auris E15 had several cluster revisions across its 2006–2014 production run. The standard 1.4 / 1.6 petrol and 2.0 diesel trims use this procedure. The 1.8 VVT-i hybrid (HSD) trim shown in the photo uses the same procedure. If your cluster is unusual (e.g. JDM import with different button layout), the steps may differ.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the actual service interval on the Auris E15?

Toyota’s published interval for Auris E15 is 10,000 miles or 12 months (16,000 km / 12 months in Europe), whichever comes first. The hybrid (HSD) trim uses the same schedule — hybrids don’t have shorter intervals on this generation. Severe-service conditions (frequent short trips, dusty environments) can tighten this to 7,500 miles.

Will resetting the service indicator clear other warning lights?

No. This reset only zeros the service-interval counter. Engine-management codes need to be cleared from the engine ECU with a scan tool. ABS / airbag / TRC warning lights are separate systems.

Does this same procedure work on the Toyota Corolla E140 / E150?

The closely-related Corolla E140 (2006–2013) and E150 (2007–2013) use a very similar ODO/TRIP procedure — the cluster firmware is shared. The exact button-name might be “TRIP RESET” instead of “ODO/TRIP” but the timing and key positions are identical. Toyota Verso (2009–2018) and Yaris XP90 (2005–2011) use a different procedure.

Why is the reset only for oil change and not other services?

The Auris E15 has only one user-resettable maintenance counter — the oil-change one. Other items (brake fluid every 4 years, coolant every 5–10 years, transmission fluid where applicable) are tracked in the workshop service record rather than on the cluster. Toyota’s service plan keeps the cluster reminder simple by design.

Can I reset the indicator without doing the oil change?

Mechanically yes. The cluster has no link to oil quality or actual mileage since last change — it’s a pure timer. But the timer is the only reminder you get; resetting without doing the work means you’ll miss the next interval too. Auris engines (especially the 1.4 / 1.6 with conventional valve gear) are unforgiving of skipped oil changes.
