Reset the Service Indicator

These instructions apply to the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross Mk1 (JY) 2013-2021. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: May 17, 2026

The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross Mk1 (JY/APK, 2013–2021) — the second-generation SX4 reimagined as a compact crossover, built in Esztergom (Hungary) for European markets, sold across pre-facelift (2013–2016) and the substantially-revised facelift (2016–2021) with a wide engine range covering 1.0 BoosterJet (K10C, 82 kW), 1.4 BoosterJet (K14C, 103 kW), 1.4 Boosterjet Smart Hybrid (K14D, 95 kW, 2020+), 1.6 VVT (M16A, 88 kW), and the short-lived 1.6 DDiS diesel (D16AA, 88 kW, 2013–2016) — uses Suzuki’s rotary-knob cluster reset. The 2016 facelift dropped the older button-and-hold method and introduced the cluster rotary control shared with the Vitara LY and the facelift Swift Mk3, and the procedure is identical across every facelift engine variant and trim. No diagnostic tool needed.

When to Reset the Service Indicator

  • After completing an oil and filter change.
  • After a scheduled inspection service.
  • If the spanner / wrench icon with “SERVICE” appears at startup.

Before You Start

  • Park on a level surface with the engine off, then turn the ignition on without starting (push START with foot off the brake on push-button cars; turn the key to “ON” on key-start cars).
  • Complete the actual service work before the reset.
  • Locate the cluster rotary control — a small rotary knob with a press function, mounted on the lower-right of the speedometer face. It both presses (push to confirm) and rotates (clockwise / anticlockwise to scroll menu options). This is the same control used for trip-meter selection during normal driving.
  • Pre-facelift cars (2013–2016): The early JY used a simpler trip-button cluster without the rotary control. The procedure below is for the facelift (2016+) and the 2020+ Smart Hybrid. For pre-facelift, see the troubleshooting section.

Tools and Supplies

None for the reset itself. For the oil change, fresh Suzuki-spec oil — 0W-20 ACEA C5 / Suzuki Genuine ECSTAR 0W-20 for the 1.0 K10C and 1.4 K14C/K14D BoosterJet petrol; 0W-30 ACEA C2/C3 for the 1.6 DDiS diesel; 5W-30 ACEA A3/B4 for the 1.6 M16A. A new spin-on filter (different parts for K10C/K14C and M16A); a 14 mm sump-plug socket; torque 35 Nm. The 1.4 K14C BoosterJet takes 4.6 L with filter; the 1.0 K10C takes 3.7 L; the 1.6 M16A takes 4.4 L.

The Service Reset Procedure

  1. Turn the ignition ON (engine off, instruments live).
  2. Press and hold the cluster rotary control for at least 5 seconds. The cluster LCD will enter the menu mode.
  3. Turn the rotary control clockwise to scroll through the menu options.
  4. Select ‘Oil change’ (or ‘Oil reset’ on some markets / language settings).
  5. Press the rotary control once to enter the Oil change item.
  6. Turn / scroll to select ‘Reset OC’ (Reset Oil Change).
  7. Press and hold the rotary control for another 5 seconds.
  8. The cluster LCD will display ‘SUCCESS’ when the reset completes.
  9. Turn the ignition off. Reset complete.

Verify the Reset Worked

Switch the ignition off, wait 30 seconds, then cycle back on. The spanner / “SERVICE” icon that was appearing at startup should be gone. Re-open the cluster menu with the rotary control and check the Oil change item — it should now show a fresh full interval. Typical JY S-Cross intervals after the reset:

  • 1.0 K10C / 1.4 K14C / 1.4 K14D BoosterJet petrol: 12,500 miles (20,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first.
  • 1.6 M16A petrol: 9,000 miles (15,000 km) or 12 months.
  • 1.6 DDiS diesel: 9,000 miles (15,000 km) or 12 months.

UK severe-service / short-trip driving requires halving the interval manually. The 1.4 K14D Smart Hybrid’s 12V/48V system doesn’t change the service interval but adds a separate 48V battery health check at the major-service intervals.

Troubleshooting

  • The cluster menu doesn’t open. The 5-second hold must be continuous; brief releases reset the timer. Ensure the ignition is fully ON, not just in accessory mode.
  • I see ‘Oil change’ but no ‘Reset OC’ option. The menu has two levels — you need to press the rotary once after selecting ‘Oil change’ to enter the sub-menu where ‘Reset OC’ appears. Don’t just turn the knob within the top-level menu.
  • ‘SUCCESS’ didn’t appear after the second 5-second hold. Release-and-hold again from step 7. The cluster needs a continuous 5 seconds without breaks.
  • Pre-facelift JY (2013–2016) — same procedure? No. The pre-facelift JY shipped with the older Suzuki cluster (no rotary control), and the reset used the trip-recorder button-and-hold method: ignition OFF → hold trip button → turn ignition ON → keep holding until indicator clears. For the rotary-cluster method described above you need the 2016+ facelift.
  • Smart Hybrid (1.4 K14D, 2020+) — anything different? No. The 48V mild-hybrid system uses the same cluster and same rotary control. The service indicator only tracks the oil interval, not the 48V battery.
  • Reset works but warning returns after a few miles. 12V battery condition. Load-test; replace if older than 5 years. On Smart Hybrid cars also check the 12V auxiliary battery in the boot — separate from the 48V traction unit.
  • 4WD AllGrip S-Cross — same procedure? Yes. AllGrip is a driveline option; the cluster and reset path are identical.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the spanner symbol on the SX4 S-Cross mean?

On the JY S-Cross the spanner / wrench icon is the service-distance reminder — it indicates the oil-change interval has been reached. The icon does not indicate an engine fault and isn’t related to the engine-check (CEL) warning.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

No. Every facelift JY S-Cross uses the owner-accessible rotary-control method. Suzuki SDT and aftermarket scan tools can also reset the service counter via OBD-II, but the cluster method is the standard route.

Does the reset clear engine fault codes?

No. The reset zeros the service-distance counter only. Engine fault codes need a scan tool. For DTC interpretation see autodtcs.com.

Is the procedure the same as the Vitara LY and Swift Mk3?

Yes — the facelift JY S-Cross, Suzuki Vitara Mk4 (LY, 2015–2024), and the facelift Swift Mk3 (AZG/AZH 2017+) share the same Suzuki cluster generation with the rotary-knob control, and the menu path ‘Oil change → Reset OC’ is identical across all three. The Swift Mk3 facelift (2017+) added this method; the pre-facelift Mk3 (2010–2016) used the older trip-button approach.

How often does the SX4 S-Cross service indicator come up?

Suzuki’s UK-market schedule for the JY S-Cross is 12,500 miles (20,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first on the BoosterJet petrol engines, and 9,000 miles (15,000 km) or 12 months on the older 1.6 M16A petrol and 1.6 DDiS diesel. Severe-use driving (predominantly short trips, towing, dusty conditions) halves the interval.

What about the SX4 S-Cross Mk2 (AK, 2022+)?

The Mk2 S-Cross (AK, 2022-onwards) uses a redesigned cluster and a different menu structure. We’ll publish a dedicated AK guide.
