Turn Off the Start-Stop System

These instructions apply to the Vauxhall Astra Mk6 (J/P10) 2010-2018. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The automatic start/stop system on the Vauxhall Astra J (Mk6, 2010–2018) — the Opel Astra J elsewhere in Europe — switches the engine off when you stop and restarts it as you pull away. Fitted to ecoFLEX models, it saves a little fuel in town but many owners find it intrusive. This guide shows how to turn start/stop off on an Astra J, an alternative way to suppress it, and why it comes back on every drive.

How Start/Stop Works on the Astra

The system only stops the engine when a set of conditions is met: the car is stationary, the engine is warm, the battery is well charged, the climate demand is satisfied, and (on a manual) the car is in neutral with the clutch up. On a cold morning or with the heater on full it may do nothing — that is the system working as designed. When it cuts the engine, a green “A” / start-stop symbol appears.

Method 1 — The Start/Stop (Eco) Button

  1. With the engine running, find the start/stop button on the centre console — on the Astra J it is the ECO/start-stop button (marked with the “A” and circular arrow).
  2. Press the button once.
  3. The start/stop warning light goes out, confirming the system is now switched off. (Note: on the Astra the light being out means off — the opposite of some other makes.)
  4. The engine will now idle normally at a standstill.

Press the button again to switch start/stop back on.

Method 2 — Seat Belt and Door Interlock

The Astra will not auto-stop the engine unless the driver’s seat belt is fastened and the driver’s door is closed. As a quick workaround:

  1. With the driver’s seat belt unbuckled, the engine will not enter auto-stop.
  2. Opening the driver’s door also inhibits the system.

Stay belted while driving — this just explains why the system sometimes seems to do nothing.

Why It Comes Back On Every Drive

The button only disables start/stop for the current drive cycle. Switch the ignition off and on and the Astra re-enables it by default, because the system counts toward the car’s official emissions figures. There is no menu setting to make “off” permanent — a permanent change requires recoding the relevant module with an Opel/Vauxhall-capable diagnostic tool, which is an at-your-own-risk modification.

Start/Stop Stopped Working? Check These First

  • Battery state of charge low — the most common reason; the system protects the battery by not stopping the engine.
  • Battery replaced but not registered — the charging system keeps it in a protective mode.
  • Engine or cabin not yet at temperature — climate demand keeps the engine running.
  • A stored fault — a battery-management or engine code can disable start/stop silently. Check what a code means on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I permanently disable start/stop on an Astra J without coding?

No — the button only lasts for the current drive. A permanent default change requires recoding with an Opel/Vauxhall diagnostic tool.

Why does the warning light go out instead of coming on?

On the Astra J the start/stop light being out indicates the system is off; when it is lit, start/stop is active. It is simply the opposite indication to some other makes.

Is it bad for the engine to keep restarting?

No. The starter and AGM battery are designed for it, and the system blocks auto-stop until the engine is warm.

Is the Vauxhall Astra J the same as the Opel Astra J?

Yes — the same car, so this procedure applies to both badges.

If a low battery is the cause, our Astra J battery disconnect/reconnect guide covers replacing and resetting it.
