If the electric windows on your BMW 3 Series (F30/F31/F80, 2011–2020) have stopped going up with a single touch, and now only move while you hold the switch, the window controller has lost its calibration. It happens after the battery is disconnected or goes flat, after a fuse is pulled, or after a window motor or regulator is replaced. The fix is a quick re-initialisation you can do yourself with no tools.
Why One-Touch and Anti-Trap Disappear
Each door module stores the fully-open and fully-closed positions so it can run the glass automatically and stop it if it meets resistance (anti-trap). A power loss clears those references, so until you re-teach them the window only inches while you hold the switch — which is why the F30 battery procedure lists a window initialisation as a follow-up step.
Before You Start
- Turn the ignition on — do not start the engine; the switches must be live.
- Make sure the battery is fully charged — the F30 will not complete the relearn on a weak battery.
- Close all the doors.
- Keep hands and objects clear of the glass — the anti-trap protection is off during the relearn.
How to Re-initialise an F30 Window
The F30 teaches both end positions — fully open, then fully closed and held. Do this one window at a time:
- Turn the ignition on (engine off) and close all the doors.
- Press and hold the window open switch to fully open the window, then hold for about 20 seconds and release.
- Pull and hold the close switch until the window is fully closed, and keep holding briefly after it seats.
- Release and check operation — the one-touch up should now work.
- Repeat for the other windows.
The long hold at the fully-open position is the key BMW step; release too early and the relearn will not store.
If the Window Still Won’t Auto-Close
- You didn’t hold long enough: keep the open switch held the full 20 seconds, then hold close until fully shut.
- Weak battery: the relearn needs a healthy battery; charge it and try again.
- Glass binding: clean and lubricate the window channel, then retry.
- Just did a battery job: expected — see our F30 battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
- No window will calibrate: the regulator, motor or switch may have failed and a fault may be stored — check the code on autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a diagnostic tool to reset the F30 windows?
No. The relearn is done entirely with the window switch as described. A scan tool is only needed if a genuine fault is stored.
Why is the hold time so long?
The F30 wants the open switch held around 20 seconds at the fully-open position to confirm the end stop. Releasing early is the usual reason the relearn fails.
Why did more than one window lose one-touch at once?
Because they lost power together — almost always after a flat or disconnected battery. Re-initialise each one.
Is the anti-trap working during the relearn?
No — keep hands and objects clear of the glass while teaching the end stops.
