Check the Engine Oil Level (No Dipstick)

These instructions apply to the BMW 3 Series Mk6 (F30/F31/F80) 2011-2020. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 5, 2026

The BMW 3 Series (F30/F31/F80, 2011–2020) has no engine oil dipstick — it uses an electronic oil-level sensor that you read through the dashboard or iDrive. If you have opened the bonnet looking for a dipstick and found none, that is normal. This guide shows how to check the oil level correctly on the F30 and top up without overfilling.

Why There’s No Dipstick

The F30 measures oil level with a sensor in the sump and reports it on the display. The reading is only accurate when the engine is at operating temperature and the car is on level ground, with the engine running — so a quick cold check gives a false figure. You need to run the measurement properly.

Before You Check

  • Warm the engine to normal operating temperature (a proper drive).
  • Park on a level surface and leave the engine running for the measurement.
  • Do not press the accelerator during the check.

Method 1 — Cars With iDrive

  1. With the engine warm and running and the car level, press “MENU”.
  2. Select “Vehicle Info” → “Vehicle status” → “Engine oil level”.
  3. Wait a few seconds and follow the on-screen instructions — the system measures and shows OK or how much to add.

Method 2 — Cars Without iDrive

  1. With the engine warm and running and the car level, use the on-board computer.
  2. Scroll the instrument-cluster menu (via the stalk/BC button) to the oil-level display.
  3. Let the gauge settle and read whether the level is OK or low.

Topping Up — Don’t Overfill

  1. If the display asks for oil, add the exact quantity it shows, in small increments.
  2. Use the correct BMW Longlife specification oil for your engine (check the cap or handbook).
  3. Add slowly, let it settle, and re-run the measurement before adding more.
  4. Do not overfill. Too much oil damages seals and the catalytic/DPF system on these engines.

Common Problems

  • “Measurement not possible”: the engine wasn’t warm, the car wasn’t level, or you need to wait a little after starting. Re-do it after a proper drive.
  • Red oil-pressure light: stop the engine — that is different from a low-level message and may indicate a fault you can look up on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the dipstick on a BMW F30?

There isn’t one — the F30 uses an electronic oil-level sensor read through iDrive (Vehicle status → Engine oil level) or the on-board computer.

Does the engine need to be running?

Yes — warm and running, on level ground, without touching the accelerator.

How much oil should I add?

Only the amount the display shows, in small steps, re-measuring between top-ups. Never pour in a full litre to be safe — overfilling harms these engines.

How often should I check it?

These engines can use oil between services, so check every few thousand miles and before long trips.
