These instructions apply to the Ford Focus Mk IV (DEH) 2019-Present.

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Ford Focus Mk4 (2019–present) is a routine job, but the Focus has a battery monitoring system (BMS) that should be reset for a new battery, and the windows need re-teaching afterwards. This guide covers the safe order of work and what the car needs once the leads are back on.

Where the Battery Is

The battery is in the engine bay under a cover. Lift the cover to reach the two clamps. Cars with start/stop use an AGM or EFB battery — replace like-for-like.

Before You Disconnect

  • Note your SYNC presets and user preferences.
  • Apply the parking brake, turn the ignition off, ensure all electrical consumers are off, and wait about 2 minutes before disconnecting.
  • To keep settings alive, plug in a memory-saver. The steps below assume you are not.
  • If working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, disconnect the battery and wait at least 3 minutes before handling those parts.

Disconnecting — Correct Order

  1. Turn the ignition off and remove the key / take the fob away.
  2. Open the bonnet and lift off the battery cover.
  3. Slacken the negative (−, earth) terminal first and lift the lead clear.
  4. Only undo the positive (+) terminal if you are removing the battery completely.
  5. If removing the battery, undo the base clamp and lift it out upright.

Reconnecting — Correct Order

  1. Refit the battery and secure the hold-down clamp.
  2. Connect the positive (+) lead first, then the negative (−) earth lead last. Tighten both firmly.
  3. Turn the ignition on for a few seconds before starting the engine.

What to Reset Afterwards

  • Reset the date and time and re-enter your SYNC presets and preferences.
  • Re-initialise the electric windows — the one-touch/anti-pinch is lost until you re-teach it (see our Focus window guide).
  • Reset the Battery Monitoring System (BMS) — if you fitted a new battery, the Focus’s BMS should be told so it charges the new battery correctly. This is done with a Ford-capable tool such as FORScan; without it the system relearns over time but charging may be sub-optimal in the meantime.

If a Light Won’t Clear

One or two lights right after reconnecting is normal and should clear on a short drive. If the airbag, ABS or engine light remains, a fault code was logged. Reading it needs an OBD scanner — you can look up what a Focus code means on our sister site autodtcs.com.

Tools You Need

  • 8 mm or 10 mm spanner/socket for the terminal clamps and hold-down.
  • Optional memory-saver to preserve settings.
  • A Ford-capable tool (e.g. FORScan) to reset the BMS for a new battery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to register a new battery on a Focus Mk4?

For best results, yes — the BMS should be reset so the charging system suits the new battery. It is done with FORScan or a Ford dealer tool; the system otherwise relearns gradually.

How long should I leave it disconnected to reset the electronics?

Around 15 minutes with the doors shut lets the modules power down fully.

Why won’t my windows auto-close after reconnecting?

Expected — the one-touch disables itself after a power loss. Re-initialise each window and it returns.

Why does the engine idle oddly after reconnecting?

The EcoBoost engine relearns its idle after a power loss — let it idle a minute and take a gentle drive to settle it.
