Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Vauxhall Corsa F (2019–present) needs a little more care than older cars. Built on the PSA/Stellantis platform, it has a Body Control unit (BSI) that must be allowed to “go to sleep” before you pull the leads — about 6 minutes — or you risk confusing the electronics. This guide covers the correct order, the sleep wait, and what to re-initialise afterwards.
Where the Battery Is
The battery sits in the engine bay. Lift any cover to reach the two terminal clamps. If you are renewing it, fit a like-for-like battery — cars with start/stop use an enhanced (EFB/AGM) battery, so match the original specification.
Before You Disconnect — The 6-Minute Sleep
- Park on a level surface. Put an automatic in P, or a manual in neutral.
- Apply the electronic parking brake and wait until it is fully applied — a confirmation message shows on the display.
- Note your radio stations and audio settings.
- Close all the doors and lock the vehicle. (On cars with a powered tailgate, open the boot, set the lock to the closed position first.)
- Remove the key / keep the fob away, then wait 6 minutes for the BSI to power down.
If working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, after disconnecting also wait 5 minutes before handling those parts.
Disconnecting
- After the 6-minute wait, slacken the negative (−, earth) terminal first and lift the lead clear.
- Only undo the positive (+) terminal if you are removing the battery completely.
- If removing the battery, undo the hold-down clamp and lift it out upright.
Reconnecting
- Refit the battery and secure the hold-down clamp.
- Connect the positive (+) lead first, then the negative (−) earth lead last. Tighten both firmly.
- Turn the ignition on and wait a couple of minutes before starting, to let the modules wake up.
What to Reset Afterwards
- Reset the date and time and reprogram your radio stations and preferences.
- Re-initialise the power windows — one-touch won’t work until re-taught (see our window initialise guide).

- Check the electronic parking brake operates before driving.
- The start/stop system may stay dormant until the battery is fully charged — normal for the first drive.
If a Warning Light Stays On
One or two lights right after reconnecting is normal. A steering or ESP light usually clears after the steering-angle drive.
