Re-initialise the Electric Windows

These instructions apply to the BMW 5 Series Mk6 (F10/F11/F18) 2010-2017. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If the one-touch (auto up/down) windows on your BMW 5 Series (F10/F11/F18, 2010–2017) have stopped working — or now only move while you hold the switch, often after a battery disconnection or a flat battery — each window needs re-initialising so it relearns its closed position. It is a quick no-tools job. This guide shows how.

Why One-Touch Stops Working

Each window motor stores its top (closed) position so the auto function and the anti-trap (pinch protection) know where the glass stops. Cutting power clears that memory, so the window only “inches” while you hold the switch. Re-initialising restores normal operation.

How to Re-initialise an F10 Window

Do this with the ignition on, one window at a time:

  1. Pull the switch up and hold it — the window rises to the top and stops.
  2. Keep holding the switch up for about 20 seconds after the window is fully closed (this teaches the closed position).
  3. Release the switch.
  4. Push the switch down and hold until the window is fully open, then hold briefly.
  5. Pull the switch up to close fully again and hold for a moment.
  6. Test the one-touch function — a single tap should now run the window automatically.

Repeat for each window that has lost the function, from its own switch.

If It Still Won’t Auto-Close

  • Repeat the procedure — the long hold at the top is what registers the limit.
  • Make sure the glass reaches the very top — grit or ice in the runner can stop it short.
  • After a battery disconnection, also re-initialise the sunroof if fitted, which also loses its settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my F10 windows lose auto after the battery was off?

Disconnecting power wipes the stored closed position, so auto and anti-trap switch off until you re-teach each window.

The window only moves while I hold the switch — is that the same fault?

Yes — that’s the “normalisation lost” state. The hold-at-the-top routine re-teaches it and one-touch returns.

The window bounces back down when closing — why?

That’s the anti-trap protection reacting because the limit isn’t learned. Complete the routine and it clears.

Do I need any tools?

No — just the door switches and the ignition on.
