If the one-touch (auto up/down) windows on your Volkswagen Golf Mk8 (CD, 2020–present) have stopped working — or now only move while you hold the switch, usually after a battery disconnection or a flat battery — each window needs re-initialising so it relearns its closed position. It is a quick no-tools job. This guide shows how.
Why One-Touch Stops Working
Each window motor stores its top (closed) position so the auto function and the anti-trap (pinch protection) know where the glass stops. Cutting power clears that memory, so the window only “inches” while you hold the switch. Re-initialising restores normal operation.
How to Re-initialise the Golf Mk8 Windows
- Turn the ignition on.
- Close all the doors and make sure all the windows are closed.
- Pull the window close switch up and hold it for about 1 second after the window is fully closed.
- Release the switch.
- Turn the ignition off. Test the one-touch function — a single tap up or down should now run the window automatically.
If more than one window lost the function, do each from its own switch (and the driver’s door pack can re-teach all four on some cars by holding the close action a moment longer).
If It Still Won’t Auto-Close
- Repeat the procedure — the brief hold after the window reaches the top is what registers the limit.
- Make sure the glass reaches the very top — grit or ice in the runner can stop it short.
- After a battery disconnection this is the step VW lists to restore the windows, so run it alongside any battery work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my Golf windows lose auto after the battery was off?
Disconnecting power wipes the stored closed position, so auto and anti-trap switch off until you re-teach each window.
The window only moves while I hold the switch — same fault?
Yes — that’s the “normalisation lost” state. The close-and-hold routine re-teaches it and one-touch returns.
The window bounces back down when closing — why?
That’s the anti-trap protection reacting because the limit isn’t learned. Complete the routine and it clears.
Do I need any tools?
No — just the door switches and the ignition on.
