If the remote on your Volkswagen Golf Mk8 (CD, 2020–present) has become weak — you have to stand close to lock or unlock, or a “key battery low” message has appeared — the fob’s coin cell needs replacing. The Golf key uses a CR2032 cell, and it opens with the help of the emergency blade. This guide shows how.
What You Need
- One fresh CR2032 3 V lithium coin cell.
- The fob’s own mechanical key (used to pop the case open).
How to Replace the Golf Mk8 Key Battery
- Pull out the mechanical (emergency) key from the fob — slide the release catch and withdraw the blade.
- Open the button-cell cover by pressing it with the mechanical key in the slot the blade leaves, and remove the key cover.
- Lift out the old CR2032 cell, noting which way up it sits.
- Fit the new cell observing the correct polarity (same way up as the old one).
- Refit the key cover and slide the mechanical key back in.
- Test lock/unlock and keyless entry from a normal distance.
Does It Need Programming?
No — replacing the coin cell does not affect the fob’s pairing, so the key keeps working immediately. A brand-new or replacement key can only be ordered and programmed by a dealer — that part is not owner-doable.
If the Car Doesn’t Respond After the Swap
If keyless entry doesn’t pick the fob up straight away, hold the fob against the start button (or the marked spot on the column) once, or lock/unlock with the emergency blade, then try again — it re-syncs quickly.
