Start the Car With a Dead Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Volkswagen Golf Mk8 (CD) 2020-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 10, 2026

The Volkswagen Golf (Mk8, 2020–Present) is push-button start across almost the whole range, so a flat fob battery feels more alarming than it is. The digital cockpit and touch controls all need the car running, but the immobiliser still reads the passive transponder inside the fob — you just have to hold the dead remote against the steering column and the Golf starts.

Start the Golf Mk8 with a dead fob

  1. Get into the car first with the emergency blade (next section), then sit in the driver’s seat and close the door.
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal — the Mk8 will not crank without it.
  3. Find the key symbol on the right of the steering column, just below the wiper stalk. That recess is the back-up transponder reader.
  4. Hold the flat face of the fob against the symbol and keep it there.
  5. With the fob still pressed in place, press the START/STOP button on the centre console. The coil energises the chip and the engine fires.

If nothing happens, the cluster usually flashes “key not detected.” Re-seat the fob squarely against the symbol and press START again — the read distance is tiny.

Unlock the Golf Mk8 with the emergency key blade

The Mk8 driver’s-door lock is hidden, so this takes two steps:

  1. On the fob, press the small release button on the side or back and pull the metal blade straight out of the body.
  2. At the driver’s door handle, look for the plastic cap at the outer end. There is a slot on its underside.
  3. Insert the blade into that slot and lever upward to pop the cap off, exposing the lock barrel.
  4. Put the blade into the barrel and turn to unlock. The alarm may chirp; it stops once you start the engine.

Why a dead fob still starts the car

The Mk8 fob carries a small coin cell that powers the proximity broadcast and the remote-lock buttons only. Engine authorisation is handled by a battery-free RFID transponder that draws power inductively from the steering-column coil. Because that chip never relies on the coin cell, the immobiliser can verify it even when the remote is stone dead — which is the whole point of the hold-against-the-column trick.

Replace the fob battery

The Mk8 remote takes one CR2032 3V lithium coin cell. Slide out the emergency blade first — on many Mk8 fobs the blade release also unlocks the battery cover. Split the case gently along the seam, swap the cell (+ side up, the same way the old one sat), and click it shut. Locking and keyless entry work again immediately, no coding required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every Golf Mk8 use push-button start?

The vast majority do, including all keyless-comfort cars. That makes the hold-against-the-column method the standard recovery for a Mk8, rather than a cut ignition key.

Where is the back-up reader on the Mk8?

On the right-hand side of the steering column, in the recess marked with a key-and-signal symbol just under the wiper stalk — the same location VW has used since the Mk7.

The screens are all dead too — is it still the fob?

Probably not. If the digital cockpit is completely black and nothing wakes when you open the door, the car’s 12V battery is flat, not the coin cell. A weak fob cell never kills the car’s own electrics.

Why does the alarm sound when I use the blade?

The car expects an authenticated remote unlock. Opening the door mechanically looks like a break-in until the immobiliser sees the transponder, so the alarm silences as soon as you start the engine.

Do I need to re-pair the fob after changing the battery?

No. The transponder is unaffected by the coin cell, so a fresh battery simply restores the remote functions instantly with no dealer visit.

If a no-start left a fault stored in the cluster, decode it on autodtcs.com before assuming the immobiliser itself is at fault rather than a flat coin cell.
