These instructions apply to the Volkswagen Golf Mk8 (CD) 2020-Present.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If the remote on your Volkswagen Golf Mk8 (CD, 2020–present) has become weak — you have to stand close to lock or unlock, or a “key battery low” message has appeared — the fob’s coin cell needs replacing. The Golf key uses a CR2032 cell, and it opens with the help of the emergency blade. This guide shows how.

What You Need

  • One fresh CR2032 3 V lithium coin cell.
  • The fob’s own mechanical key (used to pop the case open).

How to Replace the Golf Mk8 Key Battery

  1. Pull out the mechanical (emergency) key from the fob — slide the release catch and withdraw the blade.
  2. Open the button-cell cover by pressing it with the mechanical key in the slot the blade leaves, and remove the key cover.
  3. Lift out the old CR2032 cell, noting which way up it sits.
  4. Fit the new cell observing the correct polarity (same way up as the old one).
  5. Refit the key cover and slide the mechanical key back in.
  6. Test lock/unlock and keyless entry from a normal distance.

Does It Need Programming?

No — replacing the coin cell does not affect the fob’s pairing, so the key keeps working immediately. A brand-new or replacement key can only be ordered and programmed by a dealer — that part is not owner-doable.

If the Car Doesn’t Respond After the Swap

If keyless entry doesn’t pick the fob up straight away, hold the fob against the start button (or the marked spot on the column) once, or lock/unlock with the emergency blade, then try again — it re-syncs quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does the Golf Mk8 key take?

A single CR2032 3 V lithium coin cell.

Will the car still start if the key battery dies?

Yes. Hold the fob against the start button (VW marks the spot) to start using the backup transponder. The emergency blade in the fob unlocks the driver’s door — note you may set off the alarm, which the unlock button (or turning the ignition on) then cancels.

My remote still won’t work with a fresh cell — now what?

Re-open it and check the cell orientation and that the contacts are clean. If it’s still dead, the fob may have an internal fault and need replacing and programming by a dealer.

Can I program a spare key myself?

No — VW key programming needs the dealer system. Only the battery swap is owner-doable.
