Set the Windscreen Wipers to Service Position

To change the wiper blades on a Volkswagen Golf Mk8 (CD, 2020–present) you first need to put the wipers in their service position — raised up the screen so the arms lift clear of the bonnet. If you just switch off, the wipers park low under the bonnet lip where you can’t reach them. This guide shows the simple stalk routine.

Why There’s a Service Position

The Golf parks its wipers tucked below the bonnet line for aerodynamics. That makes the blades awkward to reach and risks bending an arm against the bonnet if you try to lift them there. The service position raises them so they swing away freely.

How to Set the Golf Mk8 Wiper Service Position

  1. Make sure the bonnet is closed.
  2. Turn the ignition on, then off.
  3. Within 10 seconds of switching off, push the wiper stalk down (the wipe/flick direction).
  4. The wipers move up to the service position and stop there.
  5. Lift the arms away from the glass and renew the blades.

Returning the Wipers to Normal

  1. Fold the wiper arms back down onto the screen.
  2. Turn the ignition on and operate the wipers briefly — they return to their normal parked position.

If the Wipers Won’t Move to Service Position

  • You waited too long: the stalk only commands service position within about 10 seconds of switching off — switch off and try again promptly.
  • Bonnet open: the function expects the bonnet closed; close it first.
  • Blades frozen to the glass: free them gently before operating, or the motor may stall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my Golf wipers lift off the screen normally?

They park below the bonnet line. You must put them in the service position first, using the stalk within 10 seconds of switching the ignition off.

Do I need any tools?

No — it’s done entirely with the ignition and wiper stalk.

How do I get them back to normal?

Fold the arms down, turn the ignition on and flick the wipers — they return to the parked position.

Can I damage the arms by lifting them at the parked position?

Yes — forcing them up against the bonnet can bend an arm or strain the linkage. Always use the service position.
