Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Skoda Superb Mk3 (3V, 2015–present) — to change it, or to safely work on the electrics — is a straightforward owner job. The battery sits in the engine compartment. This guide covers safe disconnection, reconnection, and the few things the car needs re-teaching afterwards.
Where the Battery Is
The 12 V battery is in the engine bay, under a plastic cover. Make a note of your audio system security code before you start if your unit uses one (most Superb infotainment doesn’t, but check).
Disconnecting the Battery
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key (or keep a keyless fob out of range).
- Open the bonnet and lift off the battery cover.
- Loosen the negative (−, black) terminal clamp first and lift the lead clear, tucking it aside.
- If removing the battery, loosen the positive (+, red) terminal next, then the hold-down clamp.
Airbag/pretensioner safety: if you’ll be working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, switch the ignition on (do not start the engine), then off, and wait 1 minute after disconnecting before going further.
Reconnecting
- Refit the battery and hold-down if removed.
- Connect positive (+) first, then negative (−) last; tighten firmly and refit the cover.
- Turn the ignition on (don’t start), then re-teach the items below.
What to Re-set Afterwards
- Power windows — one-touch must be re-initialised. See our Superb window initialise guide.
- Date, time and infotainment settings — check they’ve held.
Fitting a new battery? The Superb’s energy-management system tracks battery condition through a control unit, so a different/new battery should be registered (coded) with a VW-Group tool such as VCDS or OBDeleven so the smart charging works correctly. A simple disconnect/reconnect of the same battery doesn’t need coding.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which terminal first on the Superb?
Disconnect negative (−) first and reconnect it last, to avoid shorting against the body.
Do I have to code a new battery?
For a like-for-like swap it’ll run, but for correct charging the new battery should be registered with VCDS/OBDeleven — especially if you change type (EFB↔AGM) or capacity.
Will I lose my radio code?
Most Superb units aren’t code-locked, but note any code beforehand just in case. You’ll need to reset the clock.
Why don’t my windows auto-close after this?
Cutting power clears the windows’ learned positions. Run the quick re-initialise routine to restore one-touch.
For any warning light that stays on, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear the service reminder, see our Superb service reset guide.
