Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Dacia Duster Mk2 (HM, 2018–present) is a simple engine-bay job — but there’s one Dacia-specific catch that catches owners out: some Duster radios are code-locked, so write the radio code down before you pull the power. This guide covers the safe sequence and what to restore afterwards.
First: Note Your Radio Code
Many Duster audio units ask for a security code when power is restored. If you don’t have it, you can be locked out of the radio until a dealer retrieves it. Check the handbook wallet or the label often stuck in the service book, and note it down before disconnecting. (Newer Media Nav touchscreen units usually don’t need a code — but check.)
Where the Battery Is
The 12 V battery sits in the engine compartment, under a clip-on cover.
Disconnecting
- Park up, switch the ignition off and remove the key. If the engine’s been running, wait for the cooling fan to stop before you start.
- Loosen the negative (−, black) terminal first and lift the lead clear, tucking it aside.
- If you’re removing the battery, loosen the positive (+, red) next, then the hold-down clamp.
Airbag/pretensioner safety: if you’ll be working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, wait 5 minutes after disconnecting so the system fully powers down.
Reconnecting & Restoring
- Reconnect positive (+) first, then negative (−) last, and tighten both firmly. Refit the cover.
- Enter the radio code if prompted.
- Reset the date and time, and check your trip and personal settings.
The Duster doesn’t need the new battery coded, and there’s no window re-initialise step listed for it — so once the radio code and clock are in, you’re done.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which terminal do I disconnect first?
Always the negative (−) first, and reconnect it last, so a slipped spanner can’t short against the body.
Will I lose my radio if I disconnect the battery?
You may be asked for the security code when power returns. Note the code beforehand; if you’ve lost it, a Dacia dealer can retrieve it from the unit’s serial number.
Does the Duster need the new battery registered?
No — unlike many German cars, the Duster doesn’t need battery coding. Fit it, restore the radio code and clock, and that’s it.
Why wait for the cooling fan?
The fan can run on after the engine stops; waiting avoids it kicking in unexpectedly while your hands are near it.
If a warning light stays on afterwards, look the code up on autodtcs.com. To clear the service reminder, see our Duster service reset guide.
