Reset the Tyre Pressure Monitor (TPMS)

If the tyre-pressure light is on in your Hyundai i20 Mk3 (BC3, 2020–present) after adjusting pressures or swapping wheels, it usually just needs the car driven so the system relearns. The i20 Mk3 uses a direct TPMS — a sensor in each wheel — so the dash can show each tyre’s pressure, and the reset is automatic once the pressures are right. Seeing this light is normal after a top-up, a seasonal cold snap, or a wheel swap; on its own it is a prompt to check pressures, not a sign of a mechanical fault.

How the i20’s TPMS Works

Each wheel has a pressure sensor that radios its reading to the car, so a low corner shows on the display. There’s no button or menu step needed — you correct the pressures and the system relearns as you drive.

Because it reads real pressure rather than wheel speed, the i20 can usually tell you which tyre is low on the cluster, and a warm tyre reads a little higher than a cold one — which is why the number moves up after a few miles. The sensors run on tiny internal batteries that last for years, so the only time a normal reset won’t do is when a sensor itself has failed or a new, unmatched wheel has been fitted.

Before You Start

  • Check pressures cold — before you drive, or after the car has stood for a few hours. A hot tyre reads high and hides an under-inflated corner.
  • Use the door-pillar figure — the correct pressures are on the label in the driver’s door opening, not the maximum moulded into the tyre sidewall.
  • Set all four, including any full-size spare that is monitored, and reseat the valve caps.
  • Have a working gauge — forecourt airlines are often out by a few PSI; a pocket gauge lets you double-check.

How to Reset the i20 Mk3 TPMS

  1. Set all four tyres to the correct pressure cold — the figures are on the label in the driver’s door opening.
  2. Drive normally for about 20 minutes at a steady speed.
  3. The system confirms the new pressures and the warning goes out by itself.

If the Warning Stays On

  • Re-check every tyre, including the spare if it’s a monitored full-size wheel — one low corner keeps the light lit.
  • One tyre keeps dropping — look for a slow puncture, a nail, or a leaking valve; the system is doing its job.
  • You only did short trips — the relearn needs a continuous steady drive, not a series of quick errands.
  • A space-saver or unmatched wheel is fitted — a spare without a paired sensor can leave the light on until the road wheel is back.
  • Cold morning — an overnight temperature drop can trip the light; top up to the door figure and it clears once warm.
  • A steady-flashing TPMS light points to a sensor fault (dead sensor battery, or a sensor not matched after a wheel change) and needs a tyre shop’s tool.

What to Expect After

Once the pressures are right and you’ve driven far enough, the amber light goes out and stays off for the rest of the trip — you don’t need to repeat anything. It’s worth a quick pressure check every couple of weeks and before long journeys, since a slow leak will simply bring the warning back until the cause is fixed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the i20 TPMS need a tool to reset?

Not for a normal reset — set the pressures and drive. A tool is only needed if sensors were replaced or swapped.

How long until the light goes out?

Usually within about 20 minutes of steady driving after correcting the pressures. If your journey is a series of short stop-start trips, the system may not gather enough continuous data, so a single longer run at a steady speed clears it fastest.

Why did the light come on in cold weather?

Pressure drops as temperature falls. Top up to the door-label figure and drive.

The light keeps flashing — is that low pressure?

A persistent flash usually means a sensor fault rather than low pressure — have the sensors checked.

Can I see individual tyre pressures on the i20?

Yes — because it’s a direct system, the driver display can show each wheel’s pressure. Scroll to the tyre-pressure screen in the cluster menu to see which corner is low before you reach for the airline.

Do I need to reset after rotating the tyres?

For a straight front-to-back rotation on the same wheels, just confirm all four pressures and drive; the light clears itself. If wheels or sensors were changed, the sensors may need matching to their new positions with a shop tool.

If a fault code is stored, look it up on autodtcs.com. To clear a service reminder, see our i20 Mk3 service reset guide.
