Release the Automatic From Park (Emergency)

These instructions apply to the Mazda CX-5 Mk2 (KF) 2017-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

If the gear selector on your automatic Mazda CX-5 Mk2 (KF, 2017–present) won’t move out of P — usually with a flat 12 V battery or a shift-lock fault, so you can’t roll the car — Mazda provides a simple cabin override beside the selector. This is the only park-release an owner should do.

When You Need This

The gearbox normally releases P electronically when you press the brake with the ignition on. If the 12 V battery is flat or the shift-lock won’t energise, the lever stays locked. The manual override frees it so the car can be moved or recovered.

Before You Start

  • Apply the parking brake or chock the wheels — once out of P the car can roll.
  • Work on level ground if you can.

Method 1 — Manual Override (flat battery)

  1. Turn the ignition off.
  2. Wrap a flat-bladed screwdriver in tape (to avoid scratches) and prise off the gear-shift lock release button cover beside the selector.
  3. Press the gear-shift lock release button and, while holding it, move the gear lever out of ‘P’ into N.
  4. Remove the screwdriver and refit the cover.

Method 2 — Shift-Lock Release (battery OK)

If the battery is healthy but the lever still won’t move, with the ignition on depress the brake pedal firmly and press the shift-lock release button while moving the lever — this covers a sticking shift-lock rather than a power loss.

Important

The override only frees the selector — it doesn’t mean the car is safe to drive. Recharge/replace the 12 V battery and confirm the gearbox selects normally before driving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my CX-5 come out of Park?

Almost always a flat 12 V battery or a shift-lock fault, so the electronic release can’t energise. The cabin override beside the selector frees it.

Is this safe to do myself?

Yes — it’s the override Mazda provides. Apply the parking brake or chock the wheels first.

Do I need tools?

A taped flat screwdriver to pop the cover and press the release (Method 1). Method 2 needs only the brake and the button.

The lever still won’t move — now what?

Don’t force it. Recharge the 12 V battery first; if it still won’t release, have the car recovered.

If a flat battery caused this, see our CX-5 Mk2 battery guide. For any warning light, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
