To change the wiper blades or lift the arms off the glass in winter on a Mercedes-Benz C-Class W206 (2021–present), the wiper arms need to be in their service (vertical) position. If you just switch off, the arms park low under the bonnet edge where you can’t reach them — and where there isn’t enough room to unclip a blade or stand an arm up on its spring. Raising them to the upright service position gives you clear access to both blades and lets you flip the arms away from the screen. It is a normal, built-in feature of the car, not a fault, and on the W206 it is set from the wiper stalk. Here is how to raise them.
Why There’s a Service Position
When you switch a W206 off, the wipers drive down and tuck below the lip of the bonnet, out of the airflow and out of sight. That is good for aerodynamics and for keeping the blades clear of direct sun, but it leaves the arms in the worst possible place for maintenance. If you try to peel an arm up from the parked spot, the base of the arm fouls the bonnet trim and the plastic scuttle panel, so you end up levering against the paintwork. Force it and you can put a kink in the arm or chip the bonnet edge. The service position exists to avoid exactly that: the car first drives the arms up to the top of their sweep, well clear of the bonnet, and holds them there so you can lift them the rest of the way on their pivots.
First, a Few Checks
- Make sure the bonnet is closed and latched — the arms need the full screen height to travel into, and a raised bonnet gets in the way.
- Have the ignition on, as the stalk method below needs the wiper circuit live.
- If the blades are frozen to the glass, free them first — a stuck blade can stall the motor or tear the rubber as the arms try to rise.
- Have the new blades ready and to hand so you aren’t fighting a sprung arm while you hunt for parts.
- Plan to work one arm at a time and keep a hand on each arm you lift.
How to Set the Wiper Service Position
- Make sure the bonnet is closed.
- With the ignition on, briefly press the wiper-wash button on the end of the steering-column stalk (about a second) — on the W206 this puts the wipers into the upright service/wash position.
- The arms rise and stop vertically. Lift them away from the glass to change blades or clear snow.
Some cars also offer a wiper service position toggle in the MBUX vehicle menu — either does the same job.
Returning the Wipers to Normal
When you have finished, fold each arm gently back down onto the glass so the blade lies flat against the screen. Then switch the wipers on briefly (or cycle the ignition) — they run and re-park under the bonnet in the normal resting spot. Give the screen a quick wash-wipe afterwards to check the blades are sweeping cleanly and sitting where they should.
If the Wipers Won’t Lift
- Hold the stalk button a moment longer — a quick tap just does a single wash/wipe rather than triggering the service position.
- Check the MBUX menu for the service-position option if the stalk method doesn’t raise them.
- Confirm the ignition is on — with the car fully off the wiper circuit may not respond.
- Make sure the bonnet is fully closed so nothing blocks the arms’ travel.
- Free any frozen blade before retrying so the motor isn’t fighting ice.
- If they still won’t rise, switch everything off and repeat the sequence from the start.
Changing the Blades
With the arms upright, hold each arm firmly as you work — a wiper arm is under strong spring tension and will snap back hard against the glass if it slips, which can crack the screen. Most W206 blades use a common clip or hook fitting: press the release tab, slide the old blade off the arm, and clip the new one on until it seats with a click. Once the blade is on, lower the arm slowly onto the screen rather than letting it drop. Double-check both blades sit flush before you send the arms back to park.

Why won’t my wipers move up to be changed?
They park under the bonnet lip on purpose. If a short tap didn’t raise them, hold the stalk button a little longer, or use the MBUX service-position toggle instead.
Does setting the service position reset anything?
No. It only moves the arms to their upright maintenance spot. It doesn’t affect service intervals, warning lights or any stored settings — it’s purely a mechanical parking mode.
