These instructions apply to the Volkswagen T-Roc Mk1 (A11) 2018-Present.

When the remote for a Volkswagen T-Roc (A1/AW, 2018–present) only locks the car from arm’s length, needs a second press to respond, or has gone completely dead, the cause is nearly always the little coin cell inside the fob rather than anything wrong with the car. Every T-Roc key is the familiar VW switchblade “flip” design built on the MQB platform, with a metal blade that flicks out at the press of a button. Depending on the trim you may have the standard remote or the KESSY keyless (Keyless Access) smart key — they look almost identical, take the same battery, and open the same way. Here is how to spot a dying cell, the exact battery the T-Roc uses, how to get the case apart without cracking it, and why cutting a brand-new key is the one job you can’t finish at home.

How to Tell the Fob Battery Is Dying

  • Shrinking range. You have to be right next to the T-Roc — or hold the fob against the door handle — before it locks or unlocks. This is almost always the first sign.
  • A dash warning. On KESSY-equipped cars the instrument cluster shows a key battery low message (wording varies with software version) when the smart key is getting weak.
  • KESSY stops waking the car. If keyless entry no longer recognises the fob in your pocket and you have to press a button or use the blade, the cell is on its way out.
  • Intermittent, weather-sensitive response. A near-flat lithium cell sags in the cold, so buttons that work in a warm garage can fail on a frosty morning.

A coin cell in a T-Roc key typically lasts two to four years, depending on how often you use the remote and whether a keyless fob sits near the car waking constantly. If yours is that old and doing any of the above, fit a fresh cell before you suspect the receiver or immobiliser.

The Battery You Need

The T-Roc key takes a single CR2032 3-volt lithium coin cell — this is the cell Volkswagen supplies as the genuine replacement for the T-Roc remote, and it is the most common fob battery there is, on the shelf in any supermarket or hardware shop. The KESSY smart key uses the same CR2032.

One thing worth knowing: the T-Roc’s battery tray is a snug fit. A CR2025 is the same 20 mm diameter but 0.7 mm thinner, so a few owners fit one to make the cover close more easily — but the genuine VW part is the CR2032, so that is the safer bet for reliable range. If in doubt, match the code printed on the cell you take out. Buy a good-quality branded battery; cheap cells sag under the brief high current the transmitter draws and can give short range even when “new”.

Method — Opening the T-Roc Flip Key (Standard Remote and KESSY)

Both fob types open the same way. You are not prising the whole fob apart at the middle seam — instead a metal-look side panel lifts off to reveal the battery tray.

  1. Release the metal blade first. Press the small catch/button and pull the mechanical key blade straight out of the body. On the standard flip key the blade springs out; on the KESSY it is a separate emergency blade you rarely use — either way, remove it before you go further.
  2. Turn the fob over. Near the top you will see two small slots left behind where the blade sat.
  3. Pop off the side cover. Insert a small flat-blade screwdriver into the left-hand slot and lever gently upward until the top of the metal side panel pops free. The panel is hooked in at the bottom, so lift it away rather than yanking it.
  4. Free the battery tray. With the panel off you’ll see the coin cell in a small tray. There is a tiny hole at the edge of the tray — slide a straightened paperclip or a fine plastic tool into it and lever the tray out.
  5. Fit the new cell. Drop in the fresh CR2032 positive (+) side facing up, matching how the old one sat, and slide the tray back into the key.
  6. Reassemble. Hook the metal side panel back in at the bottom, then squeeze the top until it clicks home. Slide the blade back in until it latches. Don’t force anything — the case is plastic under that metal-look finish.

⚠️ Get the orientation right. Fit the cell the wrong way round and the key simply won’t transmit; a reversed cell can also discharge against the contacts. The reliable habit is to note which way the old battery faced before you lift it out and copy that exactly.

Did It Work?

Stand back a few metres and lock, then unlock, the T-Roc. Full range should return straight away. On a KESSY car the key battery low message clears the next time the car reads a healthy fob — sometimes instantly, occasionally after one drive cycle. If keyless entry was failing, test that the door now unlocks as you touch the handle with the fob in your pocket.

If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Fix It

  • Re-check polarity and seating. A cell fitted upside down, or one not sitting flat in its tray, is the single most common reason a “new” battery does nothing. The tray must click fully home and the cover must close without force.
  • Confirm the thickness. If the cover won’t close or the cell won’t seat flush, you may have the wrong height — forcing a too-thick cell can bend the contacts.
  • Clean the contacts. A smear of finger grease or light corrosion on the terminals is enough to cause dropouts; wipe them with a dry cloth.
  • Warning still showing? The low-key alert can take a drive or two to clear after a good cell goes in. Rarely, a weak car 12 V battery can mimic key faults — if the T-Roc itself is slow to wake or the central locking is sluggish, look at the vehicle battery next.

New Key or Spare — Why It’s a Dealer Job

Changing the coin cell keeps the fob’s existing coding, so nothing needs reprogramming and the key works immediately. A new key is a different story. The blade has to be cut to the car and, more importantly, the T-Roc’s immobiliser has to be paired to the new fob using diagnostic equipment (VW dealers use ODIS; good auto-locksmiths have equivalent tools). Blank KESSY fobs are ordered against the car’s VIN. That makes adding a spare or replacing a lost key a job for a VW dealer or a qualified auto-locksmith — so it’s worth keeping the battery in your spare key fresh too, so you’re never down to a single working fob.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does a Volkswagen T-Roc key take?

A single CR2032 3-volt lithium coin cell — the same cell for both the standard remote and the KESSY keyless smart key, and the one Volkswagen supplies as the genuine replacement.

Can I use a CR2025 instead of a CR2032?

A CR2025 is the same width but thinner, and some owners fit one because the T-Roc tray is a tight fit for a CR2032. The genuine VW cell is the CR2032, so that’s the recommended choice — but if in doubt, match the code stamped on the battery you remove.

Which way up does the battery go?

Positive (+) side up. Always copy the orientation of the cell you took out; fitting it the wrong way round means the fob won’t transmit.

Do I need to reprogram the key after changing the battery?

No. A battery swap doesn’t touch the fob’s coding, so it works straight away. Only a brand-new key needs pairing to the immobiliser.

How long should a T-Roc key battery last?

Usually two to four years. A KESSY keyless fob left sitting near the car wakes more often and can flatten sooner, so its cell may not last as long as a button-only remote.

Can I still drive the T-Roc if the fob is completely dead?

Yes. Use the emergency blade hidden in the fob to unlock the driver’s door. To start a KESSY car with a flat fob, hold the key against the marked spot on the steering column (or as your handbook shows) so the car can read it, then press the start button — a dead cell won’t strand you.

If the remote stopped responding suddenly right after the car battery was disconnected or went flat — rather than fading gradually — the cause is more likely the electronics than the coin cell, and the car may have logged a fault. You can look up what any stored code means on autodtcs.com.
