Changing the blades or freeing them from ice on an Audi Q3 Mk2 (F3, 2018–present) means first lifting the wiper arms into their service position. Park them normally and they sit under the bonnet lip out of reach — here’s the proper way up. The service position (some owners call it the winter or maintenance position) swings both front arms up to vertical and holds them there, clear of the glass and the scuttle trim, so you can unclip a worn blade or stand the arms up before a hard frost. It is a normal built-in feature, not a fault, and on the Q3 it is triggered from the wiper stalk rather than from any button under the bonnet.
Why the Service Position Exists
The Q3 parks its wiper arms low, tucked below the rear edge of the bonnet trim so they sit out of the airflow and out of sight. That looks tidy, but it means the pivot end of each arm ends up behind the plastic scuttle panel. If you simply grab a parked arm and heave it upright, the arm fouls the bonnet lip on the way up: you risk bending the arm, popping the spring clip off the blade, or chipping the paint along the bonnet edge. Lifting the arms into their proper service position first clears them of all that trim, giving you the full sweep of travel and a clean, square angle to work at. It also spreads the load through the wiper linkage the way the motor intends, instead of putting a sideways strain on a cold, stiff mechanism.
Getting Ready
- Close the bonnet. On the Q3 the service position will not arm with the bonnet up, and a raised arm can clash with an open bonnet anyway.
- Get the ignition state right. The method below needs the ignition switched on and then off — read it through once before you touch the stalk.
- Free any frozen blades first. If the rubber is iced to the screen, ease it loose by hand or with a little de-icer; driving a stuck blade with the motor can strain the linkage or blow a fuse.
- Have the new blades to hand. Once the arms are up you want to swap quickly and lower them again, not leave them standing while you hunt for parts.
- Work one arm at a time. Lift, change or clear one side, lay it back down, then do the other — it keeps both arms supported and reduces the chance of one springing back onto the glass.
Raising the Wipers
- Check the bonnet is shut — the mode won’t arm otherwise.
- Switch the ignition on, then off.
- Within a few seconds, flick the wiper stalk down (single-wipe) briefly.
- The arms sweep up and hold vertical.
- Pull them off the glass to change blades or clear snow.
Some Q3s also list a wiper service position in the MMI car/service menu; if your car offers it there, it does exactly the same job as the stalk method above.
Putting Them Back
Lay the arms back down flat against the glass first — never let them snap back on their own, as an unsupported arm can crack the screen. Then switch the ignition on and run the wipers once to return them to their normal parked spot under the bonnet lip. Give the screen a quick spray and a wipe afterwards to confirm both arms sit level and sweep cleanly.
Won’t Lift?
- Too slow — the stalk only works for a few seconds after ignition-off; start again and flick it promptly.
- Wrong ignition state — you need the on-then-off sequence, not the engine running or the car fully asleep.
- Bonnet ajar — latch it fully; a bonnet that is only on the first catch can block the mode.
- Blades frozen down — free them by hand first so the motor isn’t fighting the ice.
- Arms not parked — make sure the wipers are in their normal rest spot before you try, then retry the sequence.
- Try the menu — if your car lists the service position in the MMI, use that instead.
Changing the Blades
With an arm standing vertical, support it with one hand so it can’t drop while you work. Most Q3 blades use a common clip or hook fitting that releases with a small tab — press or pinch it, slide the old blade off the arm, and click the new one home until you feel it seat. Check it is locked before you let go. Then lower the arm gently back to the glass rather than releasing it from height, so the sprung arm never taps the screen.
