Your Volkswagen T-Cross (C11, 2019–present) shuts the engine off at a standstill to save fuel and trim emissions. When you’d rather it didn’t — crawling traffic, a hot day, or before any under-bonnet work — one button switches it off. The auto stop-start “A-in-arrow” symbol lighting up when you halt is completely normal: it is telling you the engine has parked itself, not that anything is wrong.
How Start/Stop Works on the T-Cross
On the T-Cross the system watches the car for you. Come to a full stop with your foot on the brake in an automatic (or in neutral with the clutch released in a manual) and, once conditions are right, it cuts the engine; lift off the brake or dip the clutch and it restarts in a fraction of a second. The engine only stops when a set of inhibit conditions are all satisfied — enough 12 V battery charge, a warm engine, the cabin near your set temperature, and reasonably level ground. If any one fails, the engine keeps idling to protect your comfort and battery. That is not a fault.
Before You Begin
- Do this with the car stationary and the ignition on — you don’t need the engine running to find the button.
- The switch lives on or near the centre console by the gear lever; on the T-Cross it carries the AⓇ symbol.
- If you’re about to work in the engine bay, switch start/stop off first so the engine can’t restart on its own.
- Remember the setting is per-drive: you’ll repeat it next time you start the car.
Turning Start/Stop Off
- Locate the AⓇ button (an “A” circled by an arrow), usually by the gear lever.
- Press it once; the indicator confirms the system is off and the engine stays running at stops.
Why It’s On Again Next Time
The T-Cross switches start/stop back on at every ignition cycle — there’s no permanent off from the factory. Tap the button once at the start of each drive if you don’t want it.
If the Engine Won’t Stop — or the Button Won’t Help
If start/stop is on but the engine never cuts, run through these before assuming a fault:
- A tired or ageing 12 V battery is the most common cause — the system needs healthy reserve charge to guarantee a restart, and it withdraws quietly when the battery is weak.
- Cold engine. Straight after a cold start it stays running until the coolant reaches temperature.
- Heavy climate demand. On a very hot or cold day, with the fan working hard to reach your set temperature, it will keep idling to maintain cabin comfort.
- You’re on a slope, or the car isn’t fully at rest — it prefers level ground.
- Brake pressure. In an automatic you need to hold the brake firmly; a light touch may not trigger the stop.
- Short hops. After lots of restarts on a short journey it may bow out to spare the starter and battery.
None of these is a defect. If the setting won’t hold at all, or a dedicated fault symbol appears, the 12 V battery is the first thing to have tested.
After the Reset
With the button pressed, the indicator changes to show the system is disabled and the engine idles normally at every stop for the rest of that drive — no cutting out at lights or in queues. Next time you start the car it re-arms itself automatically, unless you switch it off again.

Does start/stop wear out the engine or starter?
No. The T-Cross uses a reinforced starter and a battery matched to frequent cycling, and the engine only stops once warm. It’s designed for constant everyday use — a tired 12 V battery is far more likely to cause erratic behaviour than any engine wear.
Should I turn it off before working under the bonnet?
Yes. With start/stop active the engine could restart on its own near moving parts. Switch it off with the button first, and for anything more involved turn the ignition off entirely.
