Your Volkswagen Passat B8 (3G, 2015–2023) shuts the engine off at a standstill to save fuel. When you’d rather it didn’t — crawling traffic, a hot day, or before any under-bonnet work — one button switches it off.
Auto stop-start on the B8 Passat is a fuel-saving system working as designed, not a warning that something is wrong. Come to a stop with the brake held and the engine switches off; release the pedal, or press the clutch on a manual, and it fires straight back up. The point is to cut fuel use and emissions while you sit at lights or in a queue. How It Works on the Passat
The Passat only lets the engine stop when a set of conditions all read correctly. The 12 V battery must hold a good charge and be within a workable temperature range, the engine has to be warm, and the climate control must be near its target. Heavy heating or cooling, a nose-up gradient, steering near full lock, or low brake-servo vacuum all cause the car to keep the engine running deliberately. That is why the same Passat stops at some junctions and stays idling at others — it is judging those inputs in real time each time you halt.
Before You Begin

The system also declines to stop on its own when the battery is low, the cabin still needs heating/cooling, or you’re on a slope — all normal.
If the Engine Won’t Stop (or Won’t Stay Off)
If the system is enabled but the engine never cuts out, the Passat is holding a stop for one of these reasons:
- 12 V battery low on charge — frequent short trips or an ageing battery leave too little reserve, so the car keeps running to protect it.
- Engine still cold — no stop is permitted in the first minute or two after a cold start.
- Strong climate demand — full heating in winter or maximum cooling in summer keeps the engine turning.
- Brake pressed too softly — a light pedal or low servo vacuum can prevent a stop; press and hold firmly.
- On a slope or steering near full lock — the Passat usually stays running for control.
- Bonnet catch released — with the bonnet open the system is inhibited for safety.
If it still refuses on a warm engine with a firm brake, a weak 12 V battery is the usual explanation on this generation.
After the Reset
With the button pressed the Passat idles through every stop for the rest of that drive, and the “off” indication stays on. When you next start the car the feature is armed again automatically, so press the button once more if you want it off. Leaving it enabled causes no harm — the restart is designed to be quick and barely noticeable.
