When the remote for a BMW 2 Series (2021–present) only locks the car from arm’s length, stops flashing its indicator, or drops the keyless walk-up behaviour, the cause is nearly always a tired coin cell inside the fob. This generation spans three body styles — the G42 Coupe, the F44 Gran Coupe and the U06 Active Tourer — but they share the same modern BMW key: a slim plastic remote with a hidden metal emergency blade and Comfort Access keyless entry. That standard key takes a single cheap coin cell you can change in a couple of minutes; the one exception is the optional LCD Display Key, which has no replaceable battery at all. Here is how to tell a flat cell from a real fault, the exact battery to buy, and the proper way to split the case without cracking it.
How to Tell the Fob Battery Is Dying
- Shrinking range. You have to stand right next to the car, or hold the fob against the door handle, before it responds. This is the classic first warning and usually the earliest.
- Comfort Access gets lazy. The car no longer unlocks as you grab the handle, or won’t lock from the handle button — the low-power keyless signal is the first thing to fade as the cell weakens.
- A key-battery message in the cluster. BMW shows a “Key battery low” / “Remote control battery low” notice in the instrument display or iDrive when the fob voltage drops.
- You have to start it the backup way. If the engine only cranks when you hold the fob against the marked spot on the steering column (or in the cupholder tray on some cars), the transponder is working but the battery is nearly dead.
- Cold-weather dropouts. A near-flat lithium cell sags in the cold, so intermittent response on frosty mornings is a battery on its way out.
A coin cell in one of these keys typically lasts two to four years. If yours is older than that and behaving like the list above, fit a fresh cell before you start suspecting the car’s aerials or the immobiliser.
The Battery You Need
The standard 2 Series Comfort Access remote — the blade-style key fitted to the G42, F44 and U06 — uses a single CR2032 3-volt lithium coin cell. It is the most common fob battery there is, sold in any supermarket, hardware shop or petrol station. BMW keys have historically used either a CR2032 or the thicker CR2450 depending on the design, so the golden rule still applies: open the fob first and read the code stamped on the cell you take out, then buy to match. Fit a good branded cell — budget cells sag under the short burst of current the transmitter draws and can give weak range even when brand new.

Method 1 — Standard Comfort Access Remote (G42 / F44 / U06)
- Release the emergency blade. Press and hold the small catch on the side or base of the fob and slide the metal key blade straight out. Pulling the blade is what unlocks the case — don’t try to prise the fob open with the blade still fitted.
- Open the gap the blade leaves behind. Removing the blade exposes a slot at that end of the fob. Slip a fine flat tool into it — a small flat-blade screwdriver with the tip wrapped in tape works well, or the blade itself — and gently twist to start the two case halves apart.
- Slide the halves apart. Work along the seam and separate the back cover from the front. It should part with light pressure; if it resists, you haven’t released it evenly — don’t force it and crack the plastic.
- Swap the cell. Note how the old cell sits, ease it out from under its clip, and drop the new CR2032 in with the positive (+) face up, matching the orientation you just removed.
- Close it up. Press the two halves back together until they click all the way round, then slide the metal blade home until it latches.
⚠️ Match the polarity you removed. A coin cell fitted upside down won’t power the fob and can slowly discharge against the contacts — always copy the way the old cell faced rather than guessing.
Method 2 — The LCD Display Key (No Battery to Change)
If your 2 Series came with the optional Display Key — the chunkier fob with a small colour touchscreen — there is no coin cell inside and no case to split. It has a sealed rechargeable battery that tops up wirelessly on a Qi/inductive pad or the supplied BMW cradle, so if it stops responding, charge it fully before assuming a fault. A genuinely dead Display Key is a dealer item. Note that cars with the Display Key were also supplied with an ordinary blade-style Comfort Access key — that one takes the CR2032 in Method 1.
Confirm It Worked
Stand back a few metres and lock, then unlock, the car; full range should return at once. Walk up to the door with the fob in your pocket to confirm Comfort Access wakes the handles again. Any “key battery low” message clears once the car next reads a healthy fob — sometimes immediately, sometimes after a short drive.
If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Fix It
- Re-check polarity and seating. A cell in the wrong way up, or not fully under its clip, is the most common reason a “new” battery seems dead. The cell must sit firm against clean contacts.
- Wipe the contacts. Finger grease or light corrosion on the terminals is enough to cause dropouts — clean them with a dry cloth.
- Confirm the size. If range is still poor, double-check you fitted the code that was printed on the old cell (CR2032 vs the thicker CR2450) rather than assuming.
- Rule out the car’s own 12 V battery. A weak vehicle battery can make the car slow to recognise a perfectly good fob. If the 2 Series itself is sluggish to wake or throws unrelated electrical warnings, the aux battery — not the key — may be the real culprit.
New Key or Spare — Why It’s a Dealer Job
Changing the coin cell keeps the fob’s existing coding, so nothing needs reprogramming afterwards. A new key is a different matter: BMW keys are tied to the car’s immobiliser, and a blank has to be ordered against the VIN and coded to the vehicle with BMW’s diagnostic system. That’s why cutting and coding a spare, or replacing a lost key, is a job for a BMW dealer or a specialist auto-locksmith rather than a DIY task. The cheap insurance is to keep the battery in your spare fresh too, so you’re never down to a single working key.
