If the optional glass roof on your BMW 2 Series (G42, 2021–present) has stopped auto-opening, won’t one-touch close, or bounced back after a battery disconnect, the panel has lost its learned positions. This is a known function rather than a fault: the roof simply needs teaching where its end-stops are again. Re-initialising it takes under a minute at the switch, with no tools and no trip to a garage — you hold the roof through its closed position until it runs a short learning cycle and remembers the limits.
What Goes Wrong
The roof controller stores the fully-closed and tilt limits so that one-touch operation and anti-trap protection can work — the module needs to know exactly where ‘shut’ is to stop there cleanly and to sense an obstruction. A flat or disconnected 12 V battery wipes that stored memory, and so can a pinched obstruction that forces the panel to stop short of its normal limit. When the memory is gone, the roof drops back to a safe fallback: it will still move, but only while you keep the switch held, and one-touch and auto-close stop working until the positions are relearned. Nothing is broken — the controller is just waiting to be shown its end-stops again.
Before You Begin
- Make sure the 12 V battery is healthy — a weak battery can interrupt the learning cycle partway through.
- Switch the ignition on so the roof module is powered for the whole procedure.
- Check the roof aperture is clear of hands, cargo straps, roof-bars or debris before you cycle it.
- Clear any grit or leaves from the runners so the panel can reach its true closed position.
- Be ready to keep the switch held for several seconds past the point where the roof appears to stop.
Re-initialising the Roof
- Switch the ignition on and make sure the roof area is clear.
- Hold the switch in the ‘close/tilt-up’ direction — the panel moves to fully closed.
- Keep holding for several seconds past the stop — you may feel/hear it cycle as it relearns.
- Release, then test one-touch open and close.
Exact switch direction varies; the principle is to hold through the closed position until the panel completes a learning cycle.
Still Not Working?
- Hold longer at the closed point so the limit registers — releasing too early is the most common reason the learn doesn’t take.
- Make sure the 12 V battery is healthy — a weak battery interrupts the learn mid-cycle.
- Clear any debris from the runners so the panel can seat fully.
- If the panel still bounces back or refuses one-touch after several attempts, check for a trapped seal or a mechanical bind before assuming an electrical fault.
After the Reset
Once the learn takes, one-touch open, one-touch close and the anti-trap function should all return to normal. Run the roof fully open and fully closed once or twice to confirm it stops cleanly at each end and doesn’t reverse on its own. If it followed a battery change, it’s worth checking your other convenience features at the same time, as they can lose their settings together.

Is the roof broken if it only moves while I hold the switch?
No. Hold-to-move is the deliberate safe fallback the module uses when it has lost its stored limits. It’s telling you the positions need relearning, not that the motor or panel has failed, and the switch procedure normally restores full operation.
