Method 1 — Folding “Flip” Remote (CR2032)
- Press the small release switch on the fob and slide the folding metal blade out with your fingernail.
- Use the tip of that blade (or a small flat tool) to prise off the back cover of the fob — work it into the seam and lift gently.
- Ease the old CR2032 out. Fit the new cell with the positive (+) face towards the back cover — the same way up as the one you removed.
- Press the cover back on until it clicks, slide the metal blade home until it latches, and test every button.
Method 2 — Keyless Smart Fob (CR2450)
- Release the emergency blade first: slide the catch on the back of the fob and pull the mechanical key blade straight out.
- Insert the tip of that blade (or a small flat screwdriver) into the slot the blade leaves behind and gently twist to split the two halves of the case apart.
- Lift out the old CR2450, noting exactly which way it sat. Fit the new cell the same orientation as the one you removed — the polarity marking is stamped inside the holder, so check it before you press the cell home.
- Click the two halves back together until they snap, then slide the emergency blade back in until it latches.
⚠️ Match the orientation exactly. A coin cell fitted upside down will not power the fob and can slowly discharge against the contacts. Because the smart fob and the flip remote seat their cells differently, never assume — always copy the way the cell you took out was sitting.
Did It Work?
Stand back a few metres and lock, then unlock, the car. Full range should return straight away. On a keyless Mondeo the “Key battery low” message clears once the car next reads a healthy fob — sometimes instantly, sometimes after one short drive cycle. If push-button start was hesitating, it should now recognise the fob from inside your pocket again.
If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Fix It
- Re-check the cell and its orientation. The wrong way up, or a cell not seated firmly under its clip, is by far the most common reason a “new” battery changes nothing.
