Changing the blades or freeing them from ice on a Cupra Formentor (KM, 2020–present) means first lifting the wiper arms into their service position. Park them normally and they sit under the bonnet lip out of reach — here’s the proper way up. Raising the arms this way is completely normal and not a sign of any fault; it is simply how the Formentor keeps its wipers safely clear of the paintwork when they are switched off. You’ll want it whenever you renew a tired blade, stand the arms up in frost so the rubber doesn’t freeze to the glass and tear, or clear leaves and grit out of the scuttle channel below the screen. The car uses a quick wiper-stalk sequence to swing the arms up, and once you know the timing it takes only a few seconds.

Why the Service Position Exists

When you switch the Formentor’s wipers off, the arms drop into their parked spot low against the scuttle, tucked partly under the trailing edge of the bonnet. That keeps them out of your line of sight and protects them aerodynamically, but it also leaves almost nothing to grab. If you try to prise an arm straight up from park, the hinge is fighting the bonnet lip and the sprung linkage, and it’s all too easy to bend the arm, pop a blade clip, or chip the paint where the arm knuckle catches the bonnet edge. The service position solves that by sweeping both arms up to a near-vertical rest point on the glass, where there’s clearance behind them and the hinge can fold forward freely.

First, a Few Checks

  • Close the bonnet fully — with it open the arms would swing into it, so the mode won’t arm until the latch is home.
  • Have the ignition ready to switch on and straight back off; you’ll trigger the mode in the short window right after it goes off.
  • Make sure the blades aren’t frozen to the glass — free them first with a little warm (not boiling) water or de-icer, or the motor can stall trying to lift them.
  • Have your replacement blades unpacked and to hand before you lift the arms, so they aren’t standing under tension any longer than needed.
  • Work one arm at a time and keep clear of the swing path when the sequence fires.

Raising the Wipers

  1. Check the bonnet is shut — the mode won’t arm otherwise.
  2. Switch the ignition on, then off.
  3. Within a few seconds, flick the wiper stalk down (single-wipe) briefly.
  4. The arms sweep up and hold vertical.
  5. Pull them off the glass to change blades or clear snow.

Putting Them Back

When you’re done, fold each arm carefully back down onto the screen — don’t just let it snap back, as a spring-loaded arm dropping onto bare glass can crack it. With both arms lying flat, switch the ignition on and run the wipers once; they’ll sweep and settle back into their normal parked spot under the bonnet lip.

Won’t Lift?

  • Too slow — the stalk only works for a few seconds after ignition-off; cycle the ignition and try the flick again more promptly.
  • Bonnet ajar — latch it fully; a bonnet that isn’t quite closed blocks the mode.
  • Wrong ignition state — you need ignition on and then off, not the engine running; repeat the sequence cleanly.
  • Blades frozen down — if the arms strain but don’t rise, free the rubber from the ice first, then retry.
  • Stalk not registering — a firm, brief single-wipe flick works better than a long hold; try once more.

Changing the Blades

With the arm standing vertical, support it with one hand so it can’t spring back while you work. Most blades on this generation use a clip or hook fitting: press the small release tab, slide the blade off the hook, and fit the new one until it clicks home. Give it a gentle tug to confirm it’s seated, then lower the arm slowly onto the glass rather than releasing it. Repeat on the other side, and always lower each arm by hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set the Cupra Formentor wipers to service position?

With the bonnet shut, switch the ignition on then off, and within a few seconds flick the wiper stalk down for a single wipe. The arms sweep up and hold vertical so you can lift them off the glass.

Do I need any tools?

No tools at all — the whole thing is done with the wiper stalk. You’ll only need your hands, and the new blades if you’re renewing them.

How do I get the wipers back down?

Fold both arms flat onto the screen by hand, then switch the ignition on and run the wipers once. They’ll cycle and re-park themselves under the bonnet lip.

Can I just lift them straight up from park?

Better not to. Parked, the arms sit under the bonnet trim with little clearance, so forcing them up risks bending an arm or chipping the trim. The service position lifts them clear first.

Why won’t it enter the service position?

Usually the timing: the stalk flick has to come within a few seconds of ignition-off. Also check the bonnet is fully latched and the blades aren’t iced to the glass, then repeat the sequence.

Does using service position reset anything?

No. It only moves the wiper arms — it doesn’t clear service reminders, fault codes, or any settings. It’s purely a mechanical convenience for blade changes and winter parking.
