Replace the Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Cupra Formentor Mk1 (KM) 2020-present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

When your Cupra Formentor (KM, 2020–present) only locks from close range, the key battery is flat. It’s a quick swap with no reprogramming.

The Cell You Need

The Formentor’s remote takes a single CR2032 3 V coin cell — available anywhere. Buy one before you open the key.

Opening the Key

  1. Slide the catch and pull out the metal emergency blade.
  2. Use the blade slot to prise the back cover off the fob.
  3. Lift out the old CR2032, noting which way up it sits.
  4. Fit the new cell the same way, refit the cover and clip the blade back in.

After the Swap

Lock and unlock once within range to confirm. A battery change keeps the existing pairing — no reprogramming needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does a Cupra Formentor key take?

A single CR2032 coin cell.

Do I need to reprogram after changing it?

No — the key keeps its pairing through a battery change.

My key still won’t work — now what?

Use the blade in the driver’s door to unlock, and on keyless cars hold the fob against the start button to start, then check the cell is seated correctly.

Which way up does the cell go?

Match the orientation of the old one — usually + facing the back cover.

If the car won’t respond at all, the 12 V battery may be flat — see our Formentor battery guide. For a stored code, look it up on autodtcs.com.
