After an oil-and-filter change the service / spanner message on your Cupra Formentor (KM, 2020–present) stays lit until you clear it. It is a maintenance reminder counting down the distance and time to the next scheduled service — not a fault, and nothing to worry about. On most cars you can do it from the driver’s seat using the cluster buttons — no dealer tool needed.

What the Service Message Means
The Formentor tracks its maintenance as a service-interval reminder. As you drive, it counts down from a full interval, and when it runs out the cluster shows the spanner symbol with a service or wrench message — usually for a few seconds each time you switch on. Depending on the car’s configuration the schedule may be a fixed time-and-distance one or a longer, flexible “LongLife” one that adapts to how the car is used.
Either way it is only a reminder, not a fault: it doesn’t store a trouble code and it can’t tell that the work has been done, so it keeps reappearing until it is manually reset. That is separate from any red or amber warning lamp, which points to an actual issue rather than a due service.
Before You Start
Only reset once the service is genuinely done — the reminder is what tracks the next oil change.

Park on level ground with the electronic parking brake set. The routine runs with the ignition on and the engine off, so keep off the brake pedal when you press start and don’t crank the engine. No tools are needed — just the cluster’s trip-reset and menu/OK buttons. On the plug-in e-Hybrid, treat “engine off” as the car powered up in ignition mode but not running.
Resetting from the Cluster
- Switch the ignition off.
- Press and hold the ‘0.0’ / trip-reset button on the instrument cluster (or wiper-stalk end).
- Switch the ignition on while still holding — the service / wrench message appears.
- Release the button, then briefly press the menu/OK button to confirm the reset.
- Switch the ignition off to store it.
On Formentors with the full Digital Cockpit you can instead use Car / Vehicle menu → Service on the screen. A few cars (or certain markets) require a workshop diagnostic tool — if the cluster routine won’t take, that’s why.
If the Reset Doesn’t Work
If the spanner is still showing, run through these before assuming the car needs a tool:
- Hold the button before switching on — the prompt only shows if the trip-reset is already held as the ignition comes on.
- Ignition, not engine — do it ignition-on with the engine off; if it’s running the prompt may not appear.
- Confirm the prompt — after releasing, press the menu/OK button to confirm before the message clears itself.
- Cycle and retry — switch fully off, wait a few seconds, and repeat the sequence from the start.
- Try the screen menu — on Digital Cockpit cars, use Car / Vehicle menu → Service instead.
- Still won’t take? — a small number of cars or markets need a workshop diagnostic tool for the reset.
What to Expect After Resetting
Once the reset is confirmed, the spanner and service message clear immediately and no longer appear at start-up. The counter restarts from a full interval and counts down again toward the next service. Nothing else changes — the reset only affects the maintenance reminder, not any warning light or vehicle setting.
How Often to Reset It
Reset the reminder every time the service is completed, right after the work is finished, so it accurately tracks the next due point. The exact distance and time between services depends on your engine and whether the car runs a fixed or LongLife schedule, so follow the service plan in your owner’s handbook for the figure that applies to your Formentor rather than a generic number.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reset the service light on a Cupra Formentor?
Ignition off, hold the 0.0/trip-reset button, switch ignition on until the service message shows, release, then press the menu/OK button to confirm.
Do I need a dealer tool?
Usually no — the cluster routine works. Some cars/markets do need a diagnostic tool if the manual reset won’t complete.
Why won’t it reset?
You must be holding the reset button as you switch the ignition on, with the engine off.
Does this clear a warning light?
No — only the service reminder, not a fault light.
Can I reset it from the Digital Cockpit screen instead?
Yes — on cars with the full Digital Cockpit, open the Car / Vehicle menu, go to Service and confirm the reset there.
Is the reset different on the e-Hybrid?
The routine is the same; just make sure the car is powered up in ignition mode with the engine not running when you carry it out.
