When the service reminder appears on your Land Rover Freelander (2006–2014), you can usually reset it yourself from the instrument cluster — no dealer for a routine reset. It is a scheduled-maintenance prompt, not a fault: the car has simply reached the distance or time set for its next service. The Freelander 2 uses a trip-button method rather than the pedal sequence of newer Land Rovers. Here’s how.

What the Service Message Means

The Freelander 2 counts down to each service on a fixed schedule — a combination of distance covered and elapsed time — and displays a service reminder when the interval is reached. It is not reading the condition of the oil directly, so the message is a calendar-and-mileage prompt rather than a reaction to a problem. Because it is scheduled, the reset is the final housekeeping step after the work is done, telling the counter to start the next interval from zero.

Keep it distinct from the warning lights that signal a genuine fault. A red oil-pressure lamp, an amber engine-management light or an ABS/traction warning are all separate systems; they store or indicate a fault and are not cleared by the service-reset routine below.

Before You Start

Reset only after the service has been done. Note: if the car has covered less than about 20% of the distance to the next service, the system won’t let you reset manually — that needs dealer equipment. Don’t press the clutch or brake during the procedure.

Park on level ground with the handbrake applied and the transmission in Park (auto) or neutral (manual). Have the key ready, and make sure you can see the cluster display clearly — the routine below is timed, so it helps to know where the trip reset button sits before you begin.

Resetting the Service Indicator

  1. Insert the key into the ignition slot (don’t start the engine).
  2. Press and hold the trip reset button on the instrument cluster.
  3. While holding it, press the START/STOP button to switch the ignition on.
  4. Within 10 seconds, release the button — ‘dISt’ or ‘DATE’ appears on the display.
  5. Follow the display prompts to confirm the reset (hold the button again where prompted) until it shows the new interval, then switch off.

Later (2013 and 2014-on) Freelander 2 models use a slightly different cluster menu, but the principle — ignition on without starting, then reset via the trip button/menu — is the same.

If the Reminder Won’t Clear

  • Check you’re past the 20% threshold — too early and only a dealer tool can reset it.
  • Don’t touch the clutch or brake during the sequence.
  • Release the button in time — if dISt or DATE doesn’t appear, you likely missed the 10-second window; switch off and start again.
  • Follow every prompt to the end — the counter only zeroes once the final confirmation shows the new interval; stopping midway leaves the reminder in place.
  • A separate warning light? A fault stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

What to Expect After Resetting

Once the routine finishes, the display shows the new service interval and the reminder no longer appears when you next switch on. The reset touches only the service counter — trip meters, clock and other settings stay as they were. If the reminder is still showing at the next start, the sequence didn’t complete, so repeat it from the beginning, taking care to release the button within the timed window.

How Often to Reset It

Reset the counter once after each scheduled service, and only then. The Freelander 2’s interval is set by distance and time; the exact figures depend on the engine and the servicing regime, so follow the interval given in your owner’s handbook or service book rather than a fixed number. The 20% lock-out is a deliberate guard against accidental early resets — if you truly need to reset within that window, that is the one case where dealer equipment is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the service light on a Land Rover Freelander 2?

Ignition on (engine off), hold the trip reset button while pressing start/stop, release within 10 seconds when ‘dISt/DATE’ shows, then confirm.

Why won’t it let me reset?

If less than ~20% of the interval has elapsed, the manual reset is blocked and a dealer tool is needed.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

Not for a normal reset within the allowed window — the trip-button method works.

Is the procedure the same on later Freelander 2s?

Broadly yes — ignition on without starting, then reset via the cluster; the menu wording changed slightly from 2013.

Does resetting the service light affect anything else?

No — it only restarts the service counter. It does not clear fault codes or change any other setting.

What does ‘dISt’ or ‘DATE’ on the display mean?

They are the prompts confirming you have entered the service-reset routine — the cue to follow the on-screen steps through to the new interval.
