Home/Land Rover/Freelander/Mk2 (L359) 2006-2014/Replace the Key Fob Battery

Replace the Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Land Rover Freelander Mk2 (L359) 2006-2014. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 8, 2026

If the remote on your Land Rover Freelander (2006–2014) has lost its range, needs several presses, or has stopped responding, the coin cell inside the key is almost certainly flat. It’s a quick swap. Here’s the job, and why a new key is a dealer matter.

Battery First

The Freelander 2 key fob uses a CR2032 coin cell. A weak cell is behind nearly every “Freelander remote not working” complaint, so fit a fresh one before suspecting the car. The fob has an emergency key blade that opens the driver’s door if the remote is dead.

Replacing the Fob Battery

  1. Slide out the emergency key blade, which releases the case.
  2. Separate the two halves of the fob with a small screwdriver at the seam.
  3. Lift out the old CR2032 and fit the new cell the same way round.
  4. Close the case, refit the blade, and test lock/unlock.

Lost Key or Adding a Spare

A battery swap keeps the existing coding. A lost or broken key must be ordered and coded by a Land Rover dealer through the immobiliser — there’s no owner sequence.

If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Help

  • Check polarity and the contacts — the usual reason a swap doesn’t take.
  • Use the emergency blade to get in while you sort it.
  • Still dead? A receiver fault can store a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does the Freelander 2 key fob use?

A CR2032 coin cell — confirm against the old one.

Do I need to reprogram the fob after the swap?

No — the coding is retained for a battery change.

Can I program a new Freelander key myself?

No — a replacement must be coded by a Land Rover dealer.

How do I open the fob?

Slide the emergency blade out first, then prise the halves apart with a small screwdriver.

If the remote stopped working after a battery disconnection, see our Freelander battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
