Top Up the AdBlue

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated August 18, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Jaguar XF Mk2 (X260) 2015-Present.

If your diesel Jaguar XF (2015–present) is warning that AdBlue is low — often with a countdown of miles until the engine won’t restart — you can top it up yourself in a couple of minutes. There’s no special tool and no menu to reset: it’s just pouring the right fluid into the right filler and letting the car re-read the level. The countdown looks alarming, but it’s simply the car protecting the emissions system, and topping up in good time keeps you well clear of a no-start. Here’s how to do it cleanly and make the warning clear.

What AdBlue Is

AdBlue is a urea solution the diesel XF injects into the exhaust to cut NOx emissions. It’s consumed as you drive — roughly in proportion to fuel used — and the car warns you in stages as the tank runs down, first with a message and then with a mileage countdown. This is a legal emissions requirement, so if the tank runs completely empty the engine won’t restart until it’s refilled. That sounds dramatic, but it only happens if you ignore repeated warnings; keeping a bottle in the boot and topping up when the first message appears means you never get close.

First, a Few Checks

  • Buy the right fluid — AdBlue/DEF to spec ISO 22241; don’t substitute anything else.
  • Park on level ground so the level reads correctly after filling.
  • Have water and a cloth ready in case of spills — AdBlue crystallises and can mark paint.
  • Use a bottle with a no-spill spout if you can; it makes a clean pour much easier.
  • There’s no need to jack the car or remove panels — the filler is accessible from outside.

Topping Up the AdBlue

  1. Buy AdBlue (1.5–10 litre bottles, often with a no-spill spout). Any AdBlue/DEF to spec ISO 22241 is fine.
  2. Find the AdBlue filler — usually next to the diesel filler (blue cap).
  3. Remove the AdBlue filler cap.
  4. Refill from the bottle, adding steadily. Around 1.9 litres (one bottle) usually clears a low warning; you can add more.
  5. Refit the filler cap until it clicks.
  6. Switch the ignition on (or start and drive a short distance) so the system re-reads the level — the warning clears once it registers, sometimes after a few miles.

Tips and Troubleshooting

  • Avoid spills on paint — AdBlue is corrosive to some finishes and leaves white crystals as it dries; rinse any splashes with water straight away.
  • Pour slowly near the top — the filler can burp fluid back if you tip the bottle too fast, so ease off as it fills.
  • If the engine already won’t start, add several litres and wait a few minutes with the ignition on before cranking, so the system has time to register a usable level.
  • Warning won’t clear? Drive a few miles to let the system re-read; if it persists, an AdBlue-system fault may be logged — look it up on autodtcs.com.

Once It’s Done

Once the ignition has been on and the car has re-read the tank, the low message and the mileage countdown should disappear. On some cars it clears immediately; on others it takes a few miles of driving before the system confirms the new level, so don’t worry if it lingers briefly after a genuine top-up. If you added a full bottle to a nearly empty tank, you’ve bought yourself a long stretch before the next prompt — there’s no benefit to topping up more often than the car asks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I top up AdBlue myself on a Jaguar XF?

Yes. Remove the AdBlue filler cap, pour in AdBlue from a bottle, refit the cap until it clicks, then switch the ignition on so the system re-reads the level. It needs no tools and no dealer visit — it’s one of the simplest jobs on the car.

Where is the AdBlue filler?

It’s usually beside the diesel filler under the fuel flap, marked with a blue cap to distinguish it from the diesel filler. Because it sits right next to the fuel neck, take care to use the correct cap — never put AdBlue in the diesel tank or vice versa.

How much should I add?

At least one bottle — around 1.9 litres — to clear a low warning, and you can add more to buy longer between top-ups. If the tank has run right down to a no-start, you’ll need several litres before the system registers a usable level.

What happens if it runs out completely?

The engine won’t restart until you refill, because running without AdBlue would breach the emissions rules the car is built to. Add several litres, switch the ignition on, and allow a short wait before starting so the system can read the new level.

What AdBlue should I use?

Any AdBlue or DEF that meets spec ISO 22241 is suitable — the branding doesn’t matter as long as it meets that standard. Don’t use water, screenwash, or any other fluid; the wrong liquid in the tank can damage the injection system and prove expensive.

Why is the warning still showing after I topped up?

The system re-reads the level with the ignition on, and sometimes only confirms it after a few miles of driving. Give it a short drive; if the message stays after that, an AdBlue-system fault may be stored, which you can decode on autodtcs.com.

Only the diesel XF uses AdBlue; petrol models don’t have it. If a related warning light stays on, decode it on autodtcs.com.
