Reinitialise the Electric Sunroof

These instructions apply to the Jaguar XF Mk2 (X260) 2015-Present.

If the electric sunroof on your Jaguar XF (2015–present) has stopped working with one touch — usually after a battery disconnection or a flat battery — it needs re-initialising so it relearns its end positions. Until you do, the panel will only move while you hold the switch, and the one-touch and anti-pinch features stay disabled. It sounds like a fault, but it’s a normal consequence of the roof motor losing its memory, and it’s an owner job done entirely from the sunroof switch with no tools. Here’s how to run the relearn cycle and get normal operation back.

Why It Loses Its Calibration

The sunroof motor keeps a memory of exactly where the fully-open and fully-closed positions are, which is what lets it run to those points on a single press and reverse if it meets an obstruction. That memory is held while the car has power, so when the 12 V battery is disconnected — for a battery change, bodywork, or simply going flat — the roof forgets where its end stops are. Re-initialising walks the panel to each limit under your control so it can store those positions again. Nothing is broken; the roof just needs to be shown its range once more.

When You Need This

The sunroof loses its calibration when the 12 V battery is disconnected or goes flat, leaving the panel working only while you hold the switch. Re-initialising restores normal one-touch operation. If your roof still runs one-touch normally, you don’t need this procedure — it’s only for after a power interruption.

Getting Ready

  • Make sure the battery is healthy or the engine is running — a weak battery can interrupt the relearn part-way.
  • Park somewhere the roof can open fully without hitting a low ceiling or branches.
  • Check the track and seals are clear of leaves or grit so the panel can reach each end stop.
  • Keep fingers and objects clear of the aperture — anti-pinch may be inactive until the relearn finishes.
  • Have the ignition on before you begin.

Re-initialising the Sunroof

  1. Switch the ignition on.
  2. Press and hold the sunroof switch in the CLOSE direction until the roof is fully closed, and keep holding briefly after it stops, then release.
  3. Press and hold the switch again so the roof runs through a full open-and-close (tilt then slide) cycle, then release.
  4. The sunroof is initialised — check that one-touch operation works.

If It Won’t Initialise

  • Hold the switch until the roof reaches and holds each end stop — releasing too early means it never learns the limit.
  • Clear any debris from the seals and track so the panel can run fully to its stops.
  • Check the battery — a low voltage can stall the motor mid-cycle; try again with the engine running.
  • Don’t rush the sequence — let each movement complete before the next press.
  • Still faulty? A sunroof-module issue can store a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

What Happens Next

Once the relearn completes, a single press should open and close the roof fully without you holding the switch, and the anti-pinch reverse should be active again. Give it one full open and close to confirm it stops cleanly at each end and doesn’t creep or reverse unexpectedly. If it behaves normally, the calibration has taken and you won’t need to repeat it unless the battery is disconnected again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my XF sunroof stop working with one touch?

Its calibration is lost when the battery is disconnected or goes flat, so the motor no longer knows where its end positions are. Until it’s re-initialised the roof only moves while you hold the switch; running the relearn cycle restores normal one-touch operation.

Do I need any tools?

No. The whole procedure is done from the sunroof switch with the ignition on — there are no tools, no menus, and no workshop equipment involved. It’s designed to be an owner job you can do on the driveway in a minute or two.

What if it doesn’t complete the cycle?

Repeat the sequence, holding the switch until the roof reaches and holds each end stop rather than releasing early. Make sure the track is clear and the battery is healthy, as a low voltage or debris can stall the panel before it learns its limits.

Does this apply to the panoramic roof?

Yes — the same re-initialisation applies to the XF’s electric sunroof, panoramic or not. Both rely on the motor remembering its end positions, so both need the relearn after a power interruption; the switch sequence is the same.

Will I need to do this every time the battery goes flat?

Potentially, yes. Any time the 12 V supply is interrupted — a flat battery, a disconnect for a battery change, or bodywork — the roof can lose its calibration and want the relearn again. It only takes a moment, so it’s not a fault to worry about.

Is it safe to run with fingers near the roof?

Keep hands and objects clear of the aperture during the relearn, because the anti-pinch protection may be inactive until the cycle finishes. Once calibration is restored the reverse-on-obstruction feature works again, but don’t rely on it while the roof is still learning its positions.
