These instructions apply to the Jeep Wrangler Mk4 (JL) 2018-Present.

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Jeep Wrangler (2018–present) is a straightforward job any owner can tackle — whether you are fitting a new battery, isolating the electrics before body or accessory work, laying the Wrangler up for the off-season, or sorting out gremlins after a jump-start. The key is doing it in the right order with the ignition genuinely off, so the car powers back up cleanly and relearns almost everything itself. The battery is in the engine bay. On the 4xe plug-in hybrid there is also a high-voltage system you must leave completely alone.
Where the 12 V Battery Is
The 12 V battery is in the engine compartment — same side on both left- and right-hand-drive cars, usually under a plastic cover that lifts or unclips away. Once the bonnet is up and the cover is off, identify the two terminals before you touch anything: the negative (−) post carries the black earth lead, and the positive (+) post carries the red lead, often under a hinged red cap. On the 4xe, the high-voltage traction battery is a separate system — never touch the orange high-voltage cabling; you only ever work on the ordinary 12 V battery. Some Wranglers also carry a small auxiliary battery to support stop/start, but the main 12 V battery is the one you service.
First, a Few Checks
- Confirm the ignition is fully off and, on the 4xe, that the car is not in READY.
- Move the key fob well away from the vehicle so it cannot wake the electronics.
- Switch off the lights, heater, radio and everything else, and close the doors and tailgate.
- Jot down your radio presets and settings, and have any audio security code ready.
- Wait a couple of minutes after switching off so the modules go to sleep.
- Wear gloves and eye protection, and have the correct spanner in hand.
Disconnecting
- Switch everything off and let the car settle.
- Slacken and lift off the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive — negative always comes off before positive.
- Tuck each lead aside so it cannot flick back onto its post.
- Working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners? Wait 2 minutes after disconnecting before starting that work.
Reconnecting
- Refit the positive (+) terminal first and tighten it down.
- Refit the negative (−) terminal last and tighten it.
- Check both clamps are secure — a loose clamp causes intermittent faults — and refit the cover.
What You’ll Need to Reset Afterwards
Once power is back, the Wrangler will want a few things put right:
- Clock and audio presets re-entered, plus any radio security code.
- Power windows (if fitted) re-initialised — hold the switch fully up, then fully down at the limits so one-touch and anti-pinch relearn.
- A like-for-like battery when renewing — models with stop/start expect the correct type so charging stays right.
- Any warning lights that appear at first usually self-clear after a short drive once the modules re-synchronise.
If a Warning Light Stays On or the Car Feels Off
- Check both terminal clamps are fully tight and free of corrosion.
- Take a short, gentle drive so the systems can relearn before you worry.
- Repeat the window re-initialisation if one-touch is still lost.
- Rule out a genuinely flat or aged battery, which can trip its own warnings.
- If a light stays on, it has logged a fault code you can look up on autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the battery on a Jeep Wrangler (JL)?
In the engine compartment, under a cover, in the same place on left- and right-hand-drive cars. Some Wranglers also carry an auxiliary battery for stop/start, but the main 12 V battery is the one you disconnect and service.
Which terminal do I disconnect first?
Take the negative (−) terminal off first and reconnect it last. When reconnecting, the positive (+) goes back on first, then the negative, and both clamps are tightened down.
Is the 4xe safe to work on?
Yes, as far as the 12 V battery goes — it is disconnected exactly like any petrol Wrangler. Just make sure the car is not in READY, and never touch the orange high-voltage cabling, which is part of the separate traction-battery system.
Does a new battery need coding?
A like-for-like 12 V swap runs without special coding. On models with stop/start, fit the correct type so the charging strategy stays accurate; some workshops register a new battery to keep that management precise.
Will disconnecting the battery reset the service light or clear fault codes?
It can clear some temporary stored codes and messages, but a real fault will return, so it is no substitute for a proper repair. It will not reliably reset the mileage-based service reminder, which runs on its own schedule.
Can I jump-start it instead of disconnecting?
If the battery is simply flat, jump-starting is the quicker route and skips the resets. Disconnecting is for renewing the battery, isolating the electrics, or long storage — not for reviving a discharged one.
If a warning light stays on after reconnecting, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
