Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Porsche 911 (2019–present) — the 992 — catches owners out, because on this rear-engined car the battery isn’t at the back with the engine, it’s in the front luggage compartment (the “frunk”).
Find the Battery First
The 12 V battery is in the front luggage compartment, under the carpet/floor trim. Some 992s are fitted with a lightweight lithium-ion battery — it disconnects the same way but has an extra electrical connector; handle it gently and keep it within its temperature limits.
Disconnecting Safely
- Switch the ignition off and keep keyless transmitters well away (outside range) so the car can’t wake up.
- Lift the front-compartment floor trim to reach the battery, then disconnect the negative (−) earth cable first (on a lithium battery, also unplug its connector), then the positive.
- Working near airbags or pretensioners? Insulate the earth cable and wait about a minute before such work.
Reconnecting and Re-initialising
Reconnect positive first, then negative. The 911 then relearns:
- Power windows — one-touch needs re-initialising (see our 911 window-reset guide).
- Steering angle and assistance settle after a short drive.
- Re-enter the clock and presets.
If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards
- Warning lights often clear after a short drive.
- A persistent light stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
- Fit the correct battery type (lead-acid AGM or lithium to match the original); registering it to the energy manager needs Porsche equipment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the battery on a Porsche 911 (992)?
In the front luggage compartment (frunk), under the floor trim — not at the back with the engine.
My 911 has a lithium battery — anything different?
It disconnects the same way but has an extra connector; handle it carefully and keep it warm enough to work.
Which terminal first?
Negative (−) earth off first, reconnect it last.
Do I need to code the new battery?
A like-for-like swap works; registering it to the energy manager needs Porsche diagnostic equipment.
If a warning light stays on after reconnecting, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
