Release the Transmission from Park (Emergency)

These instructions apply to the Isuzu D-Max Mk2 (TF) 2012-2020. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 10, 2026

If the gear lever on your automatic Isuzu D-Max (TF, 2012–2020) won’t move out of ‘P’ — typically with a flat battery or a brake-switch fault — you can release it using the shift-lock override built into the lever. No tools needed.

Before You Start — Safety

  • Apply the parking brake and keep your foot on the brake — the truck can roll once ‘P’ is released.

Releasing the Lever from Park

  1. Fully depress the brake pedal.
  2. Apply the parking brake.
  3. At the same time, press the gear-shift lock release button and press the gear-lever button.
  4. Move the gear lever out of ‘P’.

After Using the Override

  • Have the cause checked — a flat battery or a faulty brake-light switch commonly triggers it.
  • A stored fault can be read — look it up on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the shift-lock release on a D-Max?

It’s the shift-lock release button at the gear lever — pressed together with the lever button.

Is it safe to use?

Only with the brake pressed and the parking brake applied — the truck can roll once out of ‘P’.

Why won’t my lever come out of P?

Often a flat battery or a brake-light switch fault stops the normal shift-lock from releasing.

Do I need a tool?

No — it’s a built-in manual override.

If the lever stuck after a battery issue, see our D-Max battery guide, and decode any fault on autodtcs.com.
