Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Tesla Model 3 (2017–2024) — for storage or before work near the airbags — is the low-voltage battery only. The high-voltage drive battery is sealed and must never be touched. The 12 V battery is at the front of the car.
Find the 12 V Battery First
The 12 V battery is at the front of the car, accessed by removing the front trunk (frunk) tub and the cowl/trim beneath it. Note your saved settings first — though most are stored in your Tesla account.
High voltage: never touch the orange high-voltage cabling. This procedure is only the 12 V battery.
Disconnecting Safely
- Power the car off from the touchscreen (Controls > Safety > Power Off) and wait a couple of minutes.
- Open the frunk and remove the tub/cowl trim to reach the battery.
- Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive.
- Working near airbags? Wait a few minutes after disconnecting.
Reconnecting
Reconnect positive first, then negative. Afterwards:
- The car re-establishes its systems — allow it a minute before driving.
- Tyre pressure monitor — drive to re-store the pressures.
- Refit the cowl and frunk trim.
