After an oil-and-filter change on your Alpina B5 / D5 (G30/G31, 2017–2024), the service indicator needs resetting. Because the car is BMW G30-based it uses Condition Based Servicing (CBS), which you reset from the driver’s display — no tool needed. The service message is a maintenance reminder, not a fault: CBS is simply telling you an item such as engine oil has reached the end of its scheduled life, and it will keep showing at start-up until you confirm the reset.
What Condition Based Servicing Means
Unlike a plain fixed-mileage counter, CBS estimates the remaining life of each maintenance item — engine oil, vehicle check, brakes, and so on — from how the car is actually used, then shows the one that is due. It presents each item as a percentage of life remaining, and once an item is used up it appears in the service menu with the wrench symbol. Doing the work does not clear the item on its own; you have to reset that specific item so CBS starts a fresh estimate for it. It is separate from the amber and red warning lamps, which indicate genuine faults.
Getting Ready
- Do the maintenance first — only reset once the work is complete.
- The clock must be set correctly, and a CBS item only resets when it’s at 90% or less of its life.
- If both ‘Engine oil’ and ‘Vehicle check’ are due, reset Engine oil first.
- Park safely and level, ignition on with the engine off — you don’t start the engine during the reset.
- No tools are required — everything is done from the driver’s display.
Resetting the Service Indicator (CBS)
- With the car, press START/STOP without the brake to switch on (don’t start the engine).
- Press and hold the trip/BC button on the wiper/indicator stalk (or the dash) until the CBS service menu appears.
- Scroll to the service item (e.g. Engine oil), then press and hold to confirm the reset.
- Repeat for any other due item, then switch off.
If the Reset Doesn’t Take
- The item must be at 90% or less of its lifetime to reset — a nearly-full item will not offer a reset, which is normal.
- Reset Engine oil before Vehicle check if both are shown.
- Hold the trip/BC button long enough to bring up the CBS menu, and hold again to confirm the highlighted item — a brief press only scrolls.
- Check the clock is set, as CBS uses date and time in its calculations.
- Don’t start the engine mid-reset — switch on without pressing the brake so the ignition is on but the engine stays off.
- A service light that won’t clear can store a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

What Happens Next
Once you confirm the item, its wrench flag clears and CBS shows it back near 100% of life remaining, so it won’t prompt again at the next start-up. Only the item you reset changes — any other due items still need resetting individually. The car drives exactly as before; the reset only updates the maintenance estimate.
How Often It Comes Up
Reset each CBS item after you carry out that specific piece of maintenance — engine oil after an oil change, vehicle check after the inspection, and so on. Because CBS bases the timing on how the car is used, the miles or months between services vary, so follow the item life shown on the display and the schedule in your owner’s handbook rather than a fixed number.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reset the service light on an Alpina B5/D5?
Ignition on (engine off), hold the stalk BC button to open the CBS menu, select the item and hold to confirm.
Do I need a tool?
No — the CBS reset is done from the driver’s display, like a BMW 5-series.
Why won’t it let me reset?
CBS only resets an item once it’s at 90% or less of its remaining life; make sure the clock is set correctly too.
Which order do I reset items?
Reset Engine oil before Vehicle check if both are due.
Does resetting one item clear the others?
No — each CBS item is reset individually, so a full service may mean resetting several items in turn.
Does the engine need to run?
No — switch on without pressing the brake so the ignition is on with the engine off, then do the reset.
