Initialise the Power Windows

If the one-touch (auto up/down) function on your Aiways U5 (2020–2024) has stopped working — usually after the 12 V battery was disconnected or went flat — the windows just need re-initialising. It’s a quick job with no tools.

What Happened

The Aiways U5 is an electric SUV, but its windows still run off the small 12 V battery rather than the main drive pack. Each door’s window module stores the exact fully-closed position, and it uses that stored point so a one-touch lift can stop cleanly at the seal and so the anti-trap (anti-pinch) can tell the top of travel apart from an obstruction. When the 12 V battery is disconnected or goes flat, that stored value is wiped. The glass still moves up and down while you hold the switch — the motor and switch are fine — but one-touch and auto-reverse stay off until each window has been run to both stops again and re-learned.

When You Need This

  • After disconnecting or replacing the 12 V battery.
  • If a window only moves while you hold the switch and won’t auto-close or auto-open.

Before You Start

  • Power the car on so the window circuits are live throughout the learn.
  • Keep the door closed so the glass reaches the seal and logs its true closed point.
  • Make sure the 12 V battery is healthy — a weak one can sag mid-run and spoil the calibration.
  • Clear the glass path of any charging cable, ice or shade that could stall it.
  • Do the windows one at a time, since each is calibrated separately.

Re-initialising Each Window

  1. Power the car on and close the door.
  2. Raise the window fully with the switch and keep holding for a couple of seconds after it stops.
  3. Lower the window fully and keep holding for a couple of seconds after it stops.
  4. Raise it fully again — one-touch should now work. Repeat for each window.

If It Still Won’t Work

  • Hold at each limit for the full couple of seconds so the module logs both the top and bottom of travel.
  • Redo the whole up-down-up cycle from the start; a half-finished learn can leave the window worse than before.
  • Re-seat the 12 V battery connections if you’ve just done battery work — a loose or dirty terminal drops voltage mid-run.
  • Use the switch in that door rather than reaching across, and shut the door fully so the glass seats.

What to Expect After

Once the up-down-up cycle finishes on a window, one-touch returns straight away — a single tap runs the glass the full way, and the anti-trap will reverse it down if it meets resistance climbing. There is no ignition cycle or waiting period. It is worth testing the anti-pinch gently with the flat of your hand near the top before you rely on it, so you know it is reacting on every door you’ve just re-taught.

Why did my Aiways U5 windows stop auto-closing?

Does the main EV battery affect this?

No. The windows run off the 12 V system, so it is a flat or disconnected 12 V battery that wipes the calibration, not the high-voltage drive pack. That is why the U5 behaves just like a petrol car here — the fix is the same manual window relearn at each switch.

Could this happen again?

Yes. Any time the 12 V battery is disconnected or goes flat — a battery swap, a deep discharge, or electrical work — the windows can lose their one-touch. It is normal and harmless; you simply run the same quick relearn afterwards. Doing it right after battery work saves confusion later over why the glass won’t auto-close.
