Home/Saab/9-5/(9600) 1998-2010/Replace the Key Fob Battery

Replace the Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Saab 9-5 (9600) 1998-2010. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

If the key fob on your Saab 9-5 (9600, 1998–2010) has gone weak or the central locking has become intermittent, the coin cell inside is almost certainly flat. Note that the 2001–2010 key uses a less common CR1632 cell — check before you buy.

Battery First — What You Need

  • A CR1632 coin cell (not the usual CR2032 — the Saab fob takes the thinner CR1632).
  • A small flat screwdriver.

Replacing the Cell

  1. Ease the fob case apart at the seam with a screwdriver.
  2. Remove the old cell (don’t touch the terminals).
  3. Fit a new CR1632, observing the correct polarity.
  4. Close the case and check the remote locks and unlocks the car.

Lost Key or Adding a Spare

A cell swap keeps the existing coding. Key programming needs a diagnostic tool (up to 4 keys; all keys, including existing ones, must be reprogrammed together) — a dealer or Saab specialist handles that.

If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Help

  • Make sure it’s a CR1632 — a CR2032 is too thick to seat.
  • Check the polarity.
  • Still intermittent? A receiver fault can store a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does the Saab 9-5 key use?

The 2001–2010 fob takes a CR1632 — thinner than the common CR2032.

Do I need to reprogram the key after the swap?

No — the coding is retained for a battery change.

Can I program a new key myself?

No — programming needs a diagnostic tool, and all keys must be re-coded together.

Why won’t a CR2032 fit?

It’s too thick — the holder is sized for the thinner CR1632.

If the fob stopped working after a battery disconnection, see our 9-5 battery guide.
