Start the Car With a Dead Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Volkswagen T-Roc Mk1 (A11) 2018-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 10, 2026

The Volkswagen T-Roc (2018–Present) shares its MQB-A0 electrics with the Polo and T-Cross, so the dead-fob procedure is the same VW pattern: the immobiliser reads the passive transponder inside the remote even when the coin cell is flat. Keyless cars start by holding the fob against the steering column; turn-key cars just need the blade.

Start a keyless T-Roc with a dead fob

If your T-Roc has Keyless Access and a START/STOP button:

  1. Enter the car with the emergency blade (next section), sit in the driver’s seat and close the door.
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal.
  3. Find the key-and-signal symbol on the steering column, just below the wiper stalk — the back-up reader coil.
  4. Hold the flat face of the fob against the symbol and keep it pressed there.
  5. Press the START/STOP button while holding the fob in place; the engine cranks.

Turn-key T-Roc — the blade starts it

Lower-spec T-Rocs use a conventional ignition barrel. With a dead fob you lose only the remote-lock buttons: unlock the driver’s door with the blade, slide the blade into the barrel and start the car as usual, since the transponder lives in the key head and is read in the ignition.

Unlock the T-Roc with the emergency key blade

  1. Slide the catch on the fob and pull out the metal blade.
  2. At the driver’s door, prise off the cap at the outer end of the handle — wedge the blade into the slot beneath the cap and lever it free.
  3. Insert the blade into the barrel and turn to unlock.

Why a flat fob still starts the car

The coin cell powers only the remote buttons and the keyless proximity broadcast. Engine authorisation uses a battery-free RFID transponder energised by the car — the ignition barrel on turn-key cars, the column coil on keyless cars. Because that chip never depends on the cell, the T-Roc is never truly immobilised by a dead fob.

Replace the fob battery

The T-Roc fob uses one CR2032 3V lithium coin cell. Remove the blade, split the case along its seam with a tape-wrapped flat tool, swap the cell + side up, and click it shut. Remote locking and keyless entry work again straight away with no re-pairing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my T-Roc keyless or turn-key?

A round START/STOP button on the console means Keyless Access; a key slot you twist means turn-key. The start method depends on which you have.

Where do I hold the fob on a keyless T-Roc?

Against the key-and-signal symbol on the steering column, just below the wiper stalk. It must be touching that recess for the reader to wake the chip.

My remote buttons died but the car still starts — why?

On a turn-key T-Roc that is normal: the flat cell disables only remote locking, while the key’s transponder still starts the engine. Change the cell when convenient.

Which battery does the T-Roc fob take?

A single CR2032 3V lithium coin cell, available from any supermarket or hardware shop.

Why did the alarm sound when I unlocked with the blade?

Mechanical entry looks like a break-in until the transponder is verified. The alarm stops the moment the engine starts.

If a fault light stayed on after the no-start, identify it on autodtcs.com to confirm it was just the fob rather than an immobiliser code.
