The Volkswagen T-Roc (2018–present) has an automatic engine start/stop system that switches the engine off at a standstill to save fuel. At a stop with the brake held the engine falls silent, then restarts the instant you move off — a normal fuel-saving feature, not a fault. If you’d rather keep it running in traffic, on a hot day, or before working in the engine bay, you switch it off with one button.
How It Works on the T-Roc
The engine control module only cuts the engine once a set of conditions is met — the car is stopped, the brake is held, the engine is warm, and the 12 V battery has enough charge. A sensor watches the battery’s state of charge, so a tired battery is the most common reason the T-Roc quietly stops shutting the engine down. Getting Ready

- Low outside temperature — on very cold mornings the system stays passive to keep cabin warmth up.
What Happens Next
With start/stop off, the indicator stays lit and the engine idles normally at every stop for the rest of the drive; it switches back on at the next ignition cycle.
