Start the Car With a Dead Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Kia Rio Mk4 (YB) 2017-2023. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

The Kia Rio (Mk4/YB, 2017–2023) shipped with two different key systems depending on trim. Mid and lower Rios use a flip key with a metal blade you turn in the ignition barrel; the GT-Line and higher trims add the Smart Key with proximity entry and a START/STOP button. When the fob battery dies, what you do next depends on which of those two your Rio has.

Start a Smart Key Rio With a Dead Fob

If your Rio has a START/STOP button and the cluster reads “Key not detected”, the fob’s radio is flat but the car can still read the key’s passive transponder up close.

  1. Get inside with the emergency blade first (see below) and sit in the driver’s seat.
  2. Press the brake pedal down firmly and hold it.
  3. Hold the Smart Key flat against the START/STOP button so the transponder inside sits over the backup reader coil behind it.
  4. Press the button through the fob. The coil energises the chip, the immobiliser recognises your key and the engine starts.

Got a flip-key Rio with an ignition barrel instead? Slide the blade into the barrel and twist as normal — the coin cell has no part in starting a turn-key Rio.

Unlock the Door With the Emergency Key Blade

  1. On the Smart Key, slide the catch on the back and pull the metal blade out. On a flip key the blade is already exposed when you flick it open.
  2. At the driver’s door, prise off the small cap behind the handle if one covers the lock barrel.
  3. Insert the blade and turn to unlock. The alarm may sound; starting the engine silences it.

Why a Flat Battery Doesn’t Strand You

The chip that authorises the engine is a battery-free RFID transponder. The car wakes it through a coil — behind the START/STOP button on Smart Key cars, or around the ignition barrel on flip-key cars. The coin cell only ever powered the long-range remote-lock radio and, on Smart Key cars, the proximity broadcast. Lose the cell and you lose hands-free locking, not the immobiliser’s ability to verify your key.

Replace the Coin Cell

  1. Pull out the emergency blade to open the seam in the case.
  2. Twist the halves apart with a coin or plastic tool.
  3. The Mk4 Rio fob uses one CR2032 3V lithium cell. Note its orientation — the plus (+) side typically faces the back cover.
  4. Drop in the fresh cell the same way up, handling it by the edges, and snap the case shut.

Remote locking and keyless start return at once. Expect two to three years from a quality cell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my Rio have keyless start? The Smart Key with a START/STOP button came on GT-Line and higher trims. Lower trims use a flip key and an ignition barrel.

Where do I hold the fob to start it? Flat against the START/STOP button, brake held, then press the button with the fob in place.

My flip-key Rio remote is dead — will it still start? Yes. Unlock the door with the blade, insert the blade in the barrel and start as usual. The dead cell only affects the remote buttons.

Why did the alarm sound when I used the blade? Manual entry reads as a break-in until the transponder is verified. Starting the engine cancels it.

Which battery does the Mk4 Rio fob take? A single CR2032 3V lithium coin cell, sold almost anywhere.

If a warning light stayed on after the no-start, look it up on autodtcs.com to confirm it was just the fob and not a stored immobiliser fault.
