Put the Electronic Parking Brake into Service Mode

The fifth-generation Land Rover Discovery (L462, 2017–Present) uses motor-on-caliper electronic parking brakes (EPB) at the rear. To change the rear pads you must wind those actuators back electronically first, and the L462 lets you do it yourself with the built-in brake service mode — a routine pad change needs no dealer scan tool.

What brake service mode does and why you need it

Each rear caliper on the Discovery 5 has its own electric actuator. Parking screws the piston out to clamp the disc and locks it mechanically; pedal pressure will not retract it. Service mode commands both rear actuators to wind fully back and holds the EPB off, giving the clearance to hinge the caliper away and seat thicker new pads.

How to enter brake service mode (Discovery L462)

This is Land Rover’s documented procedure: vehicle in Park or Neutral, ignition ON, engine OFF, parking brake released.

  1. Park level, chock a front wheel, select P and release the parking brake.
  2. Press Start without the brake pedal so the ignition is ON, engine off.
  3. Press and hold the EPB switch in the release position; wait two seconds.
  4. Press and hold the accelerator pedal at wide-open throttle; wait two seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition OFF and back ON immediately. An audible noise confirms the parking brake has released into service mode.
  6. Release the accelerator and return the EPB switch to neutral.

With the actuators wound back, remove the lower caliper bolt, swing the caliper up and change the pads.

Never force the pistons back by hand

Do not lever, push or wind the EPB piston back by hand, and never use a hydraulic compression tool against a powered caliper. The piston is driven by a geared electric motor; forcing it shears the gears and ruins the caliper. Retract electronically only via service mode, or with a generic OBD EPB tool that has Land Rover coverage if the sequence won’t take. Never improvise on the piston with hand tools.

Exit service mode and bed in the new pads

Once the new pads are in and the calipers reassembled, cancel service mode (Park or Neutral, ignition ON, engine off): press and hold the EPB switch in the apply position, wait two seconds, hold the accelerator at wide-open throttle, wait two seconds, then cycle the ignition OFF and back ON. An audible noise confirms it has left service mode; release both controls. Press the brake pedal firmly several times to take up the new pads, then bed in with 6–8 firm slowdowns from about 30 mph to a crawl, cooling between each, and drive gently for the first 200 miles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change Discovery 5 rear pads without a dealer tool? Yes — this is Land Rover’s own service-mode procedure and it retracts the EPB. A generic EPB tool is only a fallback.

Why won’t the sequence engage? The parking brake must be released first and the timing is strict; you get one attempt per ignition-on cycle. Switch fully off, back on and retry.

Does the engine need to run? No — ignition ON, engine off is correct, and the brakes stay in service mode until you cancel it.

What’s the difference between entering and exiting? Entering holds the switch in release; exiting holds it in apply. Everything else in the sequence is the same.

How do I confirm it worked? Listen for the audible actuator noise when you cycle the ignition; that confirms the brake released into service mode before you open the caliper.
