Home/Alfa Romeo/Giulietta/Mk1 (940) 2010-2020/Replace the Key Fob Battery

Replace the Key Fob Battery

These instructions apply to the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Mk1 (940) 2010-2020. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 7, 2026

If the remote on your Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010–2020) has lost its range, needs several presses, or has stopped responding, the coin cell inside the key is almost certainly flat. It’s a quick swap. Here’s the job, plus why a brand-new key is a dealer matter.

Battery First

The Giulietta key uses a CR2032 coin cell. A weak cell is behind nearly every “Giulietta remote not working” complaint, so fit a fresh one before suspecting the car. The fob has an emergency key blade that unlocks the driver’s door if the remote is dead.

Replacing the Fob Battery

  1. Press button A on the fob and remove screw B to release the case.
  2. Separate the halves and lift out the old CR2032, noting the polarity.
  3. Fit the new cell the same way round, observing the correct polarity.
  4. Reassemble in reverse order and test lock/unlock.

Lost Key or Adding a Spare

A battery swap keeps the existing coding (up to 8 keys can be registered). A lost or broken key can only be ordered from an Alfa Romeo dealer and coded with a diagnostic tool — there’s no owner sequence.

If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Help

  • Check polarity and the contacts — the usual reason a swap doesn’t take.
  • Use the emergency key blade to get in while you sort it.
  • Still dead? A receiver or body-computer fault can store a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does the Alfa Giulietta key fob use?

A CR2032 coin cell — confirm by checking the old one when you open the fob.

Do I need to reprogram the fob after the swap?

No — the coding is retained for a battery change.

Can I program a new Giulietta key myself?

No — a replacement must be ordered from Alfa Romeo and coded with a diagnostic tool.

How do I open the fob?

Press button A and remove screw B, then separate the case halves.

If the remote stopped working right after a battery disconnection, see our Giulietta battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
