When the spanner or a “Service” / “Inspection” message appears on your Audi A4 (B9/8W, 2015–present), a service interval has elapsed. This is a maintenance reminder rather than a fault: the car is telling you a scheduled service is due, and once the work is done the message needs clearing so the counter restarts. The quickest DIY route is the trip-reset button. Do the oil and filter change before you reset it.
What the Service Message Means
The B9 A4 tracks servicing on a time-and-distance basis and, depending on the car’s setup, can prompt for two separate things: an oil-change service and a longer inspection service. When either is due, the cluster shows the spanner symbol together with a “Service” or “Inspection” message and, briefly, how far overdue or how soon it is due. Some cars run a longer-life variable schedule, others a fixed schedule, which is why the mileage between prompts differs from car to car.
Whichever schedule your car uses, the message is a reminder and not a fault code. It will not clear on its own after you change the oil — the counter has to be reset so it starts measuring the next interval from zero. The steps below cover the owner-doable button reset.
Reset Only After the Service
The interval measures distance and time since the last reset, so clearing it early just hides the reminder while the oil keeps ageing.
First, a Few Checks
- Reset only after the oil, filter and any inspection items are done.
- Park on level ground, apply the parking brake and make sure the car is stationary.
- Work with the ignition on and the engine off — no tools are needed.
- Know where your trip-reset (0.0) button is before you begin; on the B9 it’s the same control you use to zero the trip meter.
How to Reset Using the Trip Button
- Turn the ignition off.
- Press and hold the reset (0.0) button — the trip-reset on the wiper stalk or instrument cluster.
- While holding it, switch the ignition on.
- A service-reset prompt appears — release the button, then press it again (or the OK/menu button) to confirm.
- If oil and inspection are tracked separately, repeat for the second prompt.
If the Button Method Doesn’t Offer a Reset
Some B9 cars only expose the reset through diagnostics. If the trip-button prompt doesn’t appear, the service indicator is reset with a VCDS/OBD tool or at a dealer. The MMI Vehicle → Service & checks menu still shows the remaining intervals.
If the Reminder Returns
- It reappears at start-up — the confirmation wasn’t completed; repeat and confirm.
- You only cleared one prompt — if the car tracks oil and inspection separately, the second reminder still needs its own reset.
- The prompt never showed — make sure you were holding the 0.0 button as the ignition came on, not after; cycle the ignition off and try again.
- A different warning is on — that’s a fault, not the service timer.
Once the Reset Is Done
Once confirmed, the “Service” or “Inspection” message clears and the cluster returns to its normal display; checking the service interval in the menu should now show a full period again. The spanner should not return the next time you start the car. If it does, the reset didn’t save, or a second interval is still outstanding — run the method again for the remaining prompt.
Reset Frequency
Reset the service indicator every time the car is serviced — after each oil change, and again for the inspection service when that falls due. The exact mileage and time between services depends on whether your car runs a fixed or longer-life variable schedule and on how it is driven, so there is no single figure that fits every A4.
